Jeremy Thompson rushed for 176 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Mason County Royals to a 20-6 season-opening win over the Paris Greyhounds Friday night. There was a one hour and 20 minute lightning delay in the second quarter. On the sixth play after the game resumed, Paris took a 6-0 lead on a 32 yard run by Tiion Thomas. Mason County answered with a one yard run by Neal Pawsat. Paris was moving the ball in Mason County territory when Ryan Foley intercepted a pass near the five yard line. Thompson scored his two touchdowns in the second half. The Royals failed to score on two red zone drives, one in each half. Mason County plays at Boone County next week. Here is the scoring summary:

Middleton signs with Georgetown College
Mason County senior Russ Middleton signed today to play basketball at Georgetown College. Middleton verbally committed to Georgetown College last October. He averaged 15 points a game playing point guard for the state champions last season. He was named to the all-state tournament team. Mason Co. vs. Paris to open the football season
The Mason County Royals host the Paris Greyhounds tonight in the Meadowview Regional Medical Center Kickoff Classic. It's Mason County's 30th season. It's Paris' 100th season.The Royals beat the Greyhounds 27-7 last season in the only meeting between the two programs. Royals Coach David Buchanan was the head coach at Paris for four seasons before coming to Mason County in 1996. J.J. Everage is the new coach at Paris. He is the Greyhounds' eighth coach in 14 seasons. Mason County is 7-5 in season openers under Coach Buchanan. Sophomore Neal Pawsat takes over at quarterback for Mason County. Last season, Pawsat completed 11 of 26 passes for 135 yards. He threw one interception. In his only start, Pawsat rushed for three touchdowns in a 34-33 overtime win over Greenup County. Senior tailback Jeremy Thompson rushed for 868 yards and nine touchdowns last year. Paris' returning players include senior tailback Tiion Thomas and junior quarterback Cody Maggard. Thomas is a speedster who rushed for 822 yards and eight touchdowns last season. Maggard completed 28 of 83 yards and three touchdowns. He threw eight interceptions. Tonight's game begins at 7:30.

Grutza leads UC to 40-7 win over EKU
Dustin Grutza completed 21 of 28 passes for a career-high 296 yards and three touchdowns to lead the University of Cincinnati Bearcats to a 40-7 season-opening win over the Eastern Kentucky University Colonels tonight. Grutza also rushed for 33 yards and one touchdown. Cincinnati plays at Oklahoma on Sept. 6.

The Batey twins combined for five goals to lead the Mason County Lady Royals to a 7-1 victory over the Bath County Lady Wildcats tonight at Mason County. Larry Harris to be inducted into Paris Greyhound Hall of Fame
Mason County assistant football coach Larry Harris will be inducted into the Paris Greyhound Hall of Fame next week. Harris was a star running back and linebacker at Paris High School. Longtime Paris statistician Eugene "Puck" Puckett says Harris carried the team on both offense and defense his senior year (1987). Puckett says no other player has carried a team on both sides of the ball in all the years he's followed Paris. The Greyhounds advanced to the state semifinals in 1987. Harris went on to play at Western Kentucky University. The Hall of Fame induction will take place on Sept. 5 when Paris hosts Bellevue. Harris will not be able to attend because Mason County plays at Boone County that night.

The Mason County boys' golf team played in a tri-match in the rain on Tuesday at the Mount Sterling Country Club, beating Paris and losing to Montgomery County. The scores were Montgomery County 160, Mason County 171 and Paris 211. Dudley Sewell led Mason County with a 41. St. Patrick sophomore Russell Rigg was the runnerup in the All "A" regional tournament.
Rigg and Rex Schlach of Deming were tied at the end of regulation after shooting 77s at Flagg Springs Golf Club today. Schlach birdied the first playoff hole to claim medalist honors. Schlach and Rigg both qualified for the All "A" state tournament at Arlington Golf Course in Richmond.

The Mason County boys' golf team finished 14th in the 24-team Tates Creek Invitational Tournament Saturday. Freshman Josh Harris led the Royals with a 79 and finished in the top 25.

Royals to open with Danville in 2009 and 2010
The Mason County Royals football team doesn't open the 2008 season until August 29, but there's big news concerning the 2009 and 2010 season openers. Mason County will open the 2009 season at home against the Danville Admirals. It will be the first meeting between the two schools. The Royals will travel to Danville to play the Admirals in the 2010 season opener. Danville has won 10 state championships. Head coach Sam Harp has a record of 215-38 at Danville. Lady Saints volleyball team beats Deming 2-1
The St. Patrick Lady Saints volleyball team is 3-0 after beating the Deming Lady Devils 2-1 tonight at St. Patrick. The scores were 25-23, 14-25 and 25-7. It was the first time I had attended a high school volleyball match and it was exciting. The first game was a thriller. Deming was in control throughout the second game, and St. Patrick dominated the third game-jumping out to a 19-3 lead. The Lady Saints' next match is August 26 at Bracken County.

Chris Morris tied for 37th place in the 5/3 Bank-Callaway Golf Kentucky Open with a three-day total of 4-over par 220. Morris shot a 3-over-par 75 in the final round today at Audubon Country Club in Louisville. Trey Bowling of Manchester won the tournament with a total of 10-under 206.

Robert Walton, who began the final round with a one-shot lead, shot a 76 Sunday and finished second, five-shots back. Steve Grayson was third (208) and Troy Grooms was fourth (211). Phillip Grayson shot a 70 Sunday and won medalist honors in a scorecard playoff. The Maysville Country Club won the Inter-City Trophy with 28 points. Walton 2nd round leader in Mason County Open
Robert Walton shot a 4-under par 66 Saturday at Kenton Station Golf Course and has a one-shot lead after two rounds of the Mason County Open. Walton, the 2003 champion, began the day four shots off the lead. He has a two-day total of 11-under 131. First round co-leaders Eric Schumacher and Steve Grayson shot 69 and 70 respectively Saturday. Schumacher is 10-under for the tournament. Grayson is 9-under. Troy Grooms was the medalist Saturday with an 8-under 62. He trails by three shots. Josh Weber shot a 66 Saturday and is four shots back. Shane Lippert and Deron Feldhaus are tied for sixth place at 4-under, seven shots off the lead. The final round will be played Sunday at the Maysville Country Club.

Schumacher and Grayson share the lead in the Mason County Open
Four-time champion Eric Schumacher and two-time champion Steve Grayson share the lead after the first round of the Mason County Open. Both fired a 9-under par 63 today at Laurel Oaks Golf Club. Schumacher, the defending champion, had a 30 on the front side. He won medalist honors in a scorecard playoff. Robert Walton shot a 67. Josh Weber had a 69. Marvin Schlach shot a 71. Shane Lippert and Jason Burns both shot a 70. The tournament moves to Kenton Station Golf Course Saturday for the second round. The final round is Sunday at the Maysville Country Club. NCCA denies Mauk's appeal, Grutza to start for UC
The NCAA denied Ben Mauk's appeal for a sixth year of eligibilty. That means former Mason County standout Dustin Grutza will once again be the starting quarterback for the University of Cincinnati. Lady Royals soccer team will scrimmage Bourbon Co. Saturday
The Mason County Lady Royals soccer team will scrimmage the Bourbon County Lady Colonels Saturday at 6 p.m. at Harrison County. The Lady Royals will travel to Covington Thursday to scrimmage Covington Latin. The season opener is August 18 at Ripley.

Mason County Blue-White football scrimmage Friday night
The Mason County football team's Blue-White scrimmage is Friday at 7 p.m. The team won't be divided into squads. Coach David Buchanan says the scrimmage will be more controlled. He says the offense will start out with four wideouts, then go to three wideouts, the I Set, Pro Set, Pro I and little bit of the Power I. Buchanan says later in the night, the freshmen will go against the younger members of the varsity. The scrimmage is open to the public.
Lady Royals open season with a win over Lady Jackets
The Mason County Lady Royals golf team opened the season Wednesday by defeating Nicholas County 201-247 at Laurel Oaks Golf Club. Lauren Vice was the medalist with a 46.

Chad Simms back from second mission trip to Romania
Pendleton County boys' basketball coach Chad Simms returned last week from his second mission trip to Romania. Simms, a 1997 graduate of Mason County High School, took part in Hoops for Hope for the second straight year. The mission trip is organized by South Laurel boys' basketball coach Steve Wright. The coaches conduct a basketball clinic for children in Romanian villages. A worship service is held each night. Simms says the mission" is to win people to Christ." Four new coaches for fall sports
The fall sports season begins next week, and four local teams will have new coaches. Three of the new coaches are at St. Patrick. Father Ivan will coach the boys' soccer team.
Sally Parker returns to her alma mater as the girls' soccer coach, and Julie McKay is the new volleyball coach. Meanwhile, at Mason County, Brett Redwine begins his first season as the boys' soccer coach.

Mason County Open begins Friday
The 14th Mason County Open, a 54-hole medal play golf tournament, begins Friday. The first round will be played at Laurel Oaks Golf Club. The second round is Saturday at Kenton Station Golf Course, and the final round is Sunday at the Maysville Country Club. The champions of the Mason County Open are members of an exclusive club. Only seven golfers have won the 13 previous tournaments. Defending champion Eric Schumacher has won the tournament a record four times. In 2004, Steve Grayson won his second Mason County Open title by shooting a tournament record 18-under par 196. Here is the list of the former champions:

Houchen and Stanfield Win Ladies Two Day Tourney at Kenton Station

Lisa Houchen and Tammy Stanfield shot a 2-under par 70 Sunday and won the annual Ladies Two-Day Tournament at Kenton Station Golf Course. Houchen and Stanfield had a 36-hole total of 8-under 136. Laura Schild and Peggy Ludwig finished second, two shots back. Cynthia Roerl and Kristian Lottman took third place with a 142. Here are the other flight winners:

Horsemen Lose, Lewis Scores 2 TDs
The Lexington Horsemen concluded their first season in arenafootball2 with a 65-37 loss to the Green Bay Blizzard in the first round of the playoffs Friday night. Harry Lewis scored two touchdowns for the Horsemen.
