Montgomery County advances to state semifinals with a win over North Laurel

Cayden Reed scored 29 points to lead the Montgomery County Indians to a 69-66 win over the North Laurel Jaguars in the quarterfinal round of the UK HealthCare Boys' Sweet 16 on Friday at Rupp Arena.

Luke Fawns hit six 3-pointers and scored 17 points and Tyce Jarvis added 14 points for the Indians who ran their winning streak to seven games.

Reece Davidson scored 41 points for North Laurel.

Reed made two free throws with six seconds to play and stole the ball from Davidson in the final seconds.

Montgomery County will play Great Crossing in the semifinals on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Great Crossing beat Coach Tim Sullivan's Cooper Jaguars 49-36.

The other semifinal will pit Bowling Green against South Oldham. Bowling Green defeated Ashland 80-74 in overtime and South Oldham edged Jeffersontown 76-75.

Tournament notes:

  • Fleming County coach Buddy Biggs was inducted into the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches Association's Court of Honor;

  • Mason County senior Kenton Johnson was recognized as an AG Athlete at halftime of the Montgomery County vs. North Laurel game;

  • South Oldham junior Kolton Wuchterl hit 10 3-pointers in today's game breaking the tournament record shared by Richie Farmer of Clay County and Chris Lofton of Mason County;

  • South Oldham is coached by former Augusta head coach Steve Simpson.
