The George Rogers Clark Lady Cardinals got off to a terrific start in the opening round of the Mingua Beef Jerkey Girls' Sweet 16 on Thursday night at Rupp Arena but they could not overcome a scoreless second quarter and lost to three-time defending state champion Sacred Heart 57-46.
GRC (30-5) led 21-10 with 1:20 left in the first quarter and was up 21-12 the end of the quarter.
Sacred Heart (28-7) outscored GRC 14-0 in the second quarter to lead 26-21 at halftime.
After the Lady Cardinals closed to within 31-30, the Valkyries ended the third quarter on a 11-2 run to lead 42-32.
Sacred Heart opened the fourth quarter with five straight points for a 47-32 lead with 4:53 remaining in the game. The biggest lead was 55-39.
This is the third straight year that Sacred Heart has defeated GRC (30-5) in the state tournament.
Kennedy Stamper led GRC in scoring with 13 points. Anaya Chestnut added 11 points.
