Lady Royals Class 2A state runners-up, Young is a state champion in two events

The Mason County girls' track and field team is the Class 2A state runner-up for the second straight year.

Mason County freshman Lexi Young is the state champion in the high jump (5-08.00) and the long jump (18-00.50). Young was third in both the 100 meter dash (12.47) and the 200 meter dash (25.48).

The Lady Royals finished with 67 points at the Clark's Pump-N-Shop Track and Field Championship presented by UK HealthCare Friday at the University of Kentucky. Lexington Catholic won the state championship with 83 points.

The Mason County Royals finished in 13th out of 44 teams in the boys' meet with 18 points. Mercer County won the state championship with 74 points. Bourbon County was the runner-up with 72 points. 

Mason County senior AJ Barrett is the state runner-up in the pole vault. He cleared 13 feet.

Other podium finishes by Mason County athletes include:

  • Layla Henderson, third in the 1600 meter run (5:17.63) and fifth in the 3200 meter run (11:39.33)
  • Paige Decker, fifth in the 800 meter run (2:24.04)
  • Madison Howard, fifth in the long jump (16-05.75)
  • CJ Arthur, fifth in the 100 meter dash (11.17) and eighth in the 200 meter dash (22.64)
  • Ava Thompson, fifth in the pole vault (10-00.00)
  • Sarah Payne, fifth in the pole vault (10-00.00)
  • Peyton Ullery, sixth in the 800 meter run (2:00.50)
  • Austin Moreland, eighth in the 110 meter hurdles (16.07) and eighth in the 300 meter hurdles (42.19)
  • The girls' 4x400 meter relay team of Paige Decker, Alexis Decker, Sarah Payne and Morgan Carpenter - fifth place -(4:15.31) 
  • The girls' 4x800 meter relay team of Paige Decker, Kolby Galloway, Elizabeth Lavinder and Layla Henderson - third place - (9:51.79)
