The 44th season of varsity football at Mason County High School begins Thursday night when the Royals play the Newport Wildcats at Thomas More University.
The season opener was originally scheduled to be played at home, but had to be changed to a road game because the installation of an artificial surface on the Mason County field has not been completed.
Games 2-4 were already set as road games. The four consecutive away games to start the season are the most for Mason County since 1991 when a delay in the installation of the bleachers at the new field (the current field), forced the Royals to play their first five games of the season on the road.
Mason County lost the first two games to Russell (28-8) and Montgomery County (20-12), but bounced back with three straight victories over East Carter (28-0), Rowan County (36-16) and Greenup County (44-0).
The Royals played their home opener on October 4 and edged Bath County 14-12.
It turned out to be a special season for Mason County with the program's first trip to the playoffs. The Royals upset Prestonsburg 38-30 on the road in the first-round and avenged a regular season loss to the Fleming County Panthers with a 14-8 victory in Flemingsburg in the second-round.
In the third-round, Mason County came up three yards short of tying the game on the final play in a 20-14 loss to Lawrence County in Louisa.
This season, the Royals are scheduled to play their first home game on September 23. They hope it is part of another special season.
