The Mason County Lady Royals track and field team is 5-for-5 this season after winning the Area 7 Championship in rainy and cool weather on Saturday at Ashland.
"Situations like today require more mental toughness than physical skill," Coach Mark Kachler wrote in an email message. "We faced that obstacle today and we were successful."
The Lady Royals had a dominating performance with 182 points. Runner-up Russell had 90 points and Ashland took third-place with 70.
In the boys' meet, the shorthanded Mason County Royals finished in fourth-place with 93 points.
"They were missing some key elements today either for the entire meet or portions of it and still were only 10 points off first place," Kachler wrote in the email message."
The Boyd County Lions won with 103 points. Russell was the runner-up with 103.5 points and Montgomery County was third with 98.5.
Eighth-grader Lexi Young won the "High Point" award for the girls with first-place finishes in the long jump (16-08.00), the high jump (4-10.00), the 200 meter dash (27.34) and the 4x100 meter relay.
Other first-place finishes by Mason County athletes include:
- Karis Applegate, the girls' 100 meter dash (13.33)
- Layla Henderson, the girls' 1600 meter run (5:31.92) and the girls' 3200 meter run (11:46.48)
- Paige Decker, the girls' 800 meter run (2:32.74)
- AJ Barrett, the boys' pole vault (12-00.00)
- The girls' 4x800 meter relay team of Alyssa Bisotti, Paige Decker, Layla Henderson and Elizabeth Lavinder (10:20.20)
- The girls' 4x200 meter relay team of Morgan Carpenter, Alexis Decker, Hadley Maher and Avery Sims (1:56.06)
- The girls' 4x100 meter relay team of Karis Applegate, Lexi Young, Sarah Payne and Neveah Wright (52.09)
- The girls' 4x400 meter relay team of Morgan Carpenter, Paige Decker, Sarah Payne and Avery Sims (4:11.89)
- The boys' 4x100 meter relay team of Anthony Bozeman, Carter Sanders, Keshaun Thomas and CJ Arthur (46.61)
