Thirty years ago tonight, the Mason County Royals defeated the Nicholas County Bluejackets 94-70 in the championship game of the 1992 10th Region Tournament in front of a huge crowd in The Fieldhouse.
It was the first season of the Maysville-Mason County merger. Three players who were on Maysville's region runner-up team in 1991 led the Royals in scoring -- Orlando Myrick with 27 points, William "Snapper" Steward with 21 and Timmy Myrick with 15.
Nicholas County senior Daniel Brown led the Bluejackets with 27 points. Brown is now the coach of the Henry Clay Blue Devils. Henry Clay will play Murray Thursday night in the opening round of the 2022 UK HealthCare Boys' Sweet 16.
Early in the 1991-92 season, Mason County edged Nicholas County 83-80 in double overtime. The victory in the region championship game ran the Royals' winning streak to 12 games. It was the first of three straight region titles for Mason County.
