50 years ago today, Maysville upset Louisville Central

Fifty years ago today, the Maysville Bulldogs upset No. 1 Louisville Central 83-70 in the quarterfinal round of the state tournament at Freedom Hall in Louisville.

Central was a huge favorite. Maysville, making its first appearance at state since 1963, knocked off Elizabethtown 85-74 in the first round, while Central had routed Paducah Tilghman 123-87.

Central had won the state tournament in 1969 and would win the state championship again in 1974. Louisville teams won the state tournament ever year from 1969 to 1975 except in 1972.

Maysville eliminated Central in 1972 with the upset on Friday afternoon. Eventual 1972 state champion Owensboro had defeated the other Louisville school, dupont Manual, in the first round.

Maysville lost to Elizabethtown 83-79 in the semifinals, and Owensboro topped Elizabethtown 71-63 in the championship game.

For local fans, it's Maysville win over Central that stands out from that tournament. It's just hard to believe it was half a century ago.
