Mason County girls 2nd, boys 3rd, Barrett and Young state champions at the Class AA Indoor State Championships

The Mason County girls' and boys' track and field teams entered the KTCCCA Class AA Indoor State Championships in Louisville on Saturday as the defending champions. They both came close to repeating. Two Mason County athletes -- AJ Barrett and Lexi Young -- are state champions in their events.

The Lady Royals were the runners-up and the Royals finished in third place, just a point behind the champion.

Bourbon County won the girls' state championship with 103.5 points. Mason County followed with 81 points. Rockcastle County finished in third place with 55 points. 

The Highland Bluebirds edged the Bourbon County Colonels 53 to 52.5 for the boys' state championship. The Royals took third place with 52 points. Butler County Bears finished in fourth place with 50 points and Mercer County had 49 points for fifth place.

Barrett broke his own school record and won the pole vault (13-06.00).

Young won the high jump (5.00) and finished third in the long jump by breaking her own school record (16-07.75).
