KHSAA votes to change first round football playoff games to adjacent districts

The first round of the Kentucky high school football playoffs will be between schools from adjacent districts instead of the same district.

The change was scheduled to take effect in 2023, but 64% percent of the football schools who responded to a survey wanted the revision to begin this coming season. The Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Control approved the change today.

KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett said 64% of the schools wanted the change to take place this year, while 7% wanted to wait until 2023, which was the original plan, and 23% did not want to change from the same district format.

Tackett said 207 of the 222 football schools responded to the survey.

Under the same-district format, teams that met in the next to last week of the regular season could sometimes end up meeting in the first round of the playoffs two weeks later.
