Mason County is headed to the Kentucky 2A Championships state tourney as Section 5 champion

The Mason County Royals are headed to the Kentucky 2A Championships state tournament for the first time after beating the Harrison County Thorobreds 68-57 in the Section 5 championship game tonight at Harrison County.

It looked the Royals were going to win in a rout after leading 59-38 at the end of the third quarter, but Harrison County opened the fourth quarter on a 19-2 run to get to within four points at 61-57 with 1:14 to play. Mason County, after not getting it first point of the quarter until the 2:43 mark, scored the final seven points of the game. The Royals only had one field goal in the fourth quarter.

KG Walton hit four three-pointers and scored a game-high 19 points for Mason County. Nate Mitchell followed with 16 points and Braylon Hamilton added 10 points.

The Royals (13-3) will play the Section 1 champion in the Kentucky 2A Championships state tournament Thursday at 3 p.m. (EST) in Owensboro. Calloway County and Hopkins Central meet in the Section 1 championship game Monday night at Union County.

Mason County's next game is Tuesday night at home vs. the Campbell County Camels.
