The Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Control voted today to have football teams play teams from another district in the first two rounds of the playoffs starting in the 2023 season.
Since 2019, teams have been playing opponents within their own district for the first two rounds of the playoffs.
In a survey of schools offering football, 109 schools wanted to play teams from another district, 58 schools wanted to keep playing teams in their district, and another 58 schools did not respond to the survey.
Mason County, Fleming County, Lewis County and Pendleton County voted to keep playing teams within Class 3A District 6. The only other school in the district, Powell County, voted to play teams from another district.
The change back to playing teams from another district will coincide with realignment of football teams in 2023. Realignment takes place every four years.
