The Kentucky High School Athletic Association's Board of Control voted today to push back the start of winter sports including basketball to January 4. The vote was unanimous.
The winter sports are latest high school sports affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The basketball season was scheduled to start next Monday.
"I just can't in good conscience recommend that we go forward next week with basketball and other winter sports, I just can't do it," KHSAA Commissioner said during a Board of Control work session this morning.
Under the plan approved today, the state basketball tournaments would still be held in March on dates that have not been finalized.
The Board of Control has scheduled a special meeting on December 10 to discuss the tournament dates.
The four local basketball teams (Mason County and St. Patrick girls and boys) had a total of 39 games scheduled in November and December.
The Kentucky 2A Sectional Tournaments and the 10th Region All "A" Classic are scheduled in what will be the opening week of the basketball season if it is able to start on January 4.
