Records are made to be broken. That's an old saying most sports fans have heard.
Some records are broken in a short period of time while others are in place for many years like the record that legendary Maysville Bulldogs coach Earle D. Jones held for 58 years for games won in the Kentucky boys' basketball state tournament.
Jones held the record from 1948 until Pleasure Ridge Park coach Dale Mabrey broke it in 2006.
The Bulldogs' 55-48 win over Owensboro in the quarterfinal round of the 1948 tournament was Jones' 17th coaching victory in the state tournament, moving him past Manual coach Neal Arnston.
Maysville beat Carr Creek 56-54 in the 1948 semifinals before losing to undefeated Brewers 55-48 in the championship game, depriving the Bulldogs of a second straight state title.
Maysville defeated Owensboro 56-40 in the opening round of the 1950 state tournament giving Jones his 19th and final state tournament victory. The Bulldogs lost to Clark County 52-43 in the quarterfinal round. 1950 was Maysville's last trip to the state tournament under Jones who retired in 1955.
Four of Jones' state tournament game victories took place when he coached at Kavanaugh.
Mabrey tied Jones' record when PRP beat Boyle County 67-43 in the opening round of the 2006 tournament and he broke the record the next night when the Panthers defeated Madison Central 58-45.
Mabrey's record was broken by Scott County coach Billy Hicks when the Cardinals beat Christian County 69-54 in the quarterfinal round of the 2010 tournament.
Hicks retired last year with 33 state tournament game victories.
That's a record that might never be broken.
