Mason County junior Evan Schumacher and Mason County sophomore Logan Shepherd qualified for the state golf tournament, but the Royals failed to qualify as a team.
Mason County was the runner-up in the 12th Region Tournament today at Indian Creek Golf Course in Mt. Sterling with a score of 315, four shots behind Montgomery County.
In past years, both the region champion and the runner-up advanced to the state tournament, but beginning this year, only the region champion and the top seven individuals advance.
Schumacher shot a 3-over 74 and was the individual runner-up. Shepherd's 79 put him in a tie for fifth place and he survived a six-man playoff for a spot in the state tournament. Kaden Grooms shot an 80 and Spencer Magee carded an 85. The four lowest scores are used for the team total.
The Leachman-Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA Boys' State Golf Championship is scheduled October 10-12 at Bowling Green Country Club.
