After 40 years in the press box, I was a fan in the stands at a high school football game for the first time since 1976 or 1977.
It was fun sitting with my wife Glenda and two of my three daughters watching the Mason County Royals open the season at home against the Russell Red Devils last night. Glenda and I attended the Maysville Bulldogs' 1976 Homecoming game on our first date.
Where have 43 years gone?
I was asked last night if it feel weird and if I was going to sit there and call the play-by-play. I answered no to both questions.
It was perfect weather for football. The crowd was huge and the student body was out in force. Peoples Bank's sponsorship of free admission for the students had to help.
I thought about how this scene was playing out in communities throughout the country. Kids playing their hearts out and fans coming together to cheer them on.
From my seat inside the 10 yard line, the band sounded better, the cheerleaders were louder, the lights seemed brighter and I saw more of the action compared to when I called the games and had to concentrate on where the football was at all times.
As for the game, Mason County lost, 49-13.
(Full disclosure: Mason County offensive coordinator Dean Ravencraft is my son-in-law.)
Russell is much better than Mason County right now, but I saw some good things from the Royals. I thought they played hard and were physical.
The two teams played a scoreless first quarter, but the Red Devils running game appeared to finally wear down the Royals.
Field position was a key factor as most of the game was played in Mason County territory.
Highlights for the Royals included two interceptions by Kolby Jones and two touchdown passes from Carson Brammer to Jeremiah Jones.
Football has never been easy, especially at Mason County, even with all-state players on 12-win teams. But with the move back down to Class AAA, I believe the Royals will be competitive in their new district this season and for years to come.
Friday nights have always been special. I would not trade my 40 years on the radio for anything, but this is a new chapter in my life, and I had a blast last night.
I didn't make it to the concession stand, but there is another home game next week when the Royals host Harrison County on Homecoming.
I will save you a seat.
