Royals fall at Rowan County

The Mason County Royals rallied from a 13-point deficit to tie the game, but were outscored 14-8 in the closing minutes and lost to the Rowan County Vikings 64-58 tonight in Morehead.

After trailing by 13 points in the second quarter and by 11 in the third quarter, Mason County tied the game at 50-50 with 4:20 to play.

With 3:51 left Leevi Dunaway was called for a technical foul after a scramble for a loose ball.

After the technical, Rowan County scored nine straight points to lead 59-50 with 1:52 remaining.

"(Dunaway) shouldn't have over reacted like he did, that's on him, but, bottom line is, he got kneed in the back of the head. You know, there was no call," Mason County coach Buddy Biggs said. "The guy had him down on the floor pushing him, then, kneed him in the back of the head. They don't call anything, course he over reacted, and that's on him, that's why we took him out of the game."

Dunaway, who scored a game-high 20 points, sat out the rest of the game.

The Royals got to within three points twice in the closing minute, but Rowan County sealed the win at the free throw line.

The Vikings were 13-of 15 on free throws for the game including 11-of-13 in the fourth quarter.

Rowan County shot 60.9 percent from the field in the first half including 7-of-11 on three-pointers.

Mason County shot 54.2 percent from the field in the second half.

Dalton Perkins scored 13 points and Xylon Frey added 10 points.

The Royals close out the regular season Thursday night at Bishop Brossart.
