Holmes beats Central 67-63 in double-overtime for state title

The Holmes Bulldogs outlasted the Central Yellowjackets 67-63 in double-overtime in the championship game of the 92nd National City/KHSAA Sweet Sixteen Saturday night at Rupp Arena. It's Holmes first state title. The Bulldogs were state runnerup in 1978, 1990 and 2008. There were seven ties and 12 lead changes in the game. Central led by 10 points in the third quarter. Holmes had a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter. Holmes junior guard Ricardo Johnson was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Holmes finished the season with a 36-2 record.

  • Total attendance for the tournament was 130,706. It is the highest total for a tournament since 1993 when 137,328 attended the tournament;
  • Mason County senior Ryan Hamm received a $1,000 Sweet Sixteen Scholarship.
