Royals top St. Xavier 62-55


The Mason County Royals used a 16-1 run to beat Cincinnati St. Xavier 62-55 today in the Bluegrass-Buckeye Charity Holiday Classic at the Bank of Kentucky Center at Northern Kentucky University. There were seven lead changes and 10 ties. St. Xavier led 43-37 with 5:12 left in the game. Neal Pawsat had a four-point play to begin the Royals' 16-1 run which put Mason County up 53-44. The Bombers got to within two at 53-51, but Mason County was able to hang on for its fourth straight win. St. Xavier only had one field goal in the fourth quarter.
Russ Middleton led Mason County with 22 points and moved past Tommy Corde into 10th place on the Royals' all-time scoring list. Erik Stenger, a 6-7 senior center, scored a game-high 24 points for St. Xavier, but was held to two points in the fourth quarter. Mason County plays at Pendleton County Tuesday night.
