Royals lose to Highlands 54-51 in double overtime

The Mason County Royals lost to the Highlands Bluebirds 54-51 in double overtime at The Fieldhouse tonight in the season opener for both teams. Mason County led by nine points in the third quarter, but trailed by five with 37 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Russ Middleton hit 2-of-3 free throws and Treg Setty drained a three-pointer to tie the game. The Royals had a chance to win the game in regulation, but missed a shot inside and missed the offensive tap. Mason County's Phil Barner grabbed the rebound and was trying to get off a shot when he was fouled, but the officials ruled that time had expired before the foul was called. Stephen Kowolonek had 24 points and 13 rebounds for Highlands. Mason County was led by Setty with 16 points and Middleton with 15. Mason County was without two starters- Keith Downing and Ryan Hamm. Highlands was missing some players who are members of the Bluebirds' football team. The loss snapped a couple of long winning streaks- Mason County had won 13 straight season openers and 20 consecutive home openers. Highlands won the junior varsity game in double overtime. The Royals play at Covington Catholic Friday night.
