Here is the press release from Mason County Coach Mark Kachler:
Mason County opened the outdoor track season on Saturday at the Rowan County Invitational. The boys team was lead to a 4th place finish by Jim Myers 1stplace finish in the 3200 meters, 2nd in the 1600 meters and a 4x800 meter relay finish in 3rd place. The boys team is dominated this year with fresh faces having only one senior in Daniel Reed returning from last year's State Meet performers. A large number of skill position athletes from the football team (mostly sophomores and freshmen) have joined the track team this year. Westin Stahl of both the basketball and football teams is making his firs tappearance on the track team this year. With most of these athletes participating in their first ever track meet the results were surprisingly good. The girls team was lead to a third place finish by Kasey Litzinger who won the discus and was second in the shot put. The girls had a balance of scoring from multiple athletes but were paced also by 8th grader Valerie Rice who was second in the 1600 meters and competed with Rachel White, Blaine Menke and Sara Bellingham for a second place finish in the 4 x 800 meter relay. The girls team was competing without perennial All- State athlete Desarae Chambers who was playing inthe Ohio-Kentucky All-Star Game.
" I was very pleased with our performances today," Coach Mark Kachler said. "The cold weather and especially the wind made the times and distances less than the best. Our youth gives us a very bright future. With one senior boy and 3 senior girls, we are younger than we have ever been but our numbers are very good and they are learning very quickly what it takes to be successful."
Here is a link to the complete results.
Note: Kasey Litzinger's winning throw in the discus (90-01.50) is the fourth longest in Class AA so far this year and was long enough to make the Elite category in the Milesplit rankings.
