The Mason County Royals used a couple of second half runs to defeat the Montgomery County Indians 69-55 today in the championship game of the Pepsi Mason County Invitational Tournament. There were four ties and four lead changes in the first half. Montgomery County led by four points in the second quarter, but Mason County rallied to lead 27-22 at the half.
The Royals opened the third quarter with a 13-2 run to go up 40-24. Russ Middleton hit three straight three-pointers during the run. Montgomery County got to within five points at 52-47 with just under five minutes remaining, but Mason County put the game away with another 13-2 run.
It was a physical game with 20 fouls on each team. Mason County was 23 of 69 from the field for 33.3%. Montgomery County made just 17 of 57 shots for 29.8%. Middleton had a game-high 22 points including 11 in the fourth quarter. Darius Miller had a double-double, 18 points and 14 rebounds. He also blocked six shots. Ethan King added 12 points. Jordan Stephens had a double-double, 17 points and 14 rebounds, for Montgomery County. The two teams meet again on
Feb. 5th at Montgomery County.
