The Mason County Royals edged the St. Patrick Saints 6-4 in the championship game of the
39th District Baseball Tournament tonight at Mason County. After two scoreless innings,
Royals' centerfielder Richie Cox hit a two run home run in the third inning. St. Patrick took the lead with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning. Mason County went back in front 4-3 with two unearned runs in the fourth. Cox made it 5-3 with an RBI single in the fifth inning.
St. Patrick pitcher Chris Owens drove in John Stwarka with a sacrific fly in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to one, and the Saints had runners at second and third with one out. But Mason County shortstop Cory Woods turned a line out into an inning ending double play. The Royals got an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Woods. St. Patrick threatened in the bottom of seventh as Jason Conway lead off with a single. But the next two batters struck out and Owens flied out to deep left field. Owens and Mason County starter Darrin Doyle both went the distance. Doyle struck out five batters. Owens had four strikeouts. Stwarka went three for four and scored two runs for St. Patrick. Both teams advance to the 10th Region Tournament next week at Montgomery County. Here is the All-Tournament Team:
Richie Cox, Darrin Doyle, Kyle Marinaro and Cory Woods of Mason County, John Stwarka,
Chris Owens and Nick Anderson of St. Patrick, Matt Groves and Jeremy Hardymon of Augusta, and Jonathon Cline and Andrew Cummins of Bracken County.
