Royals shutout by Montgomery County

The Mason County Royals were shutout by the Montgomery County Indians 5-0 tonight. It was the first time the Royals had been shutout this season. Mason County has lost three straight games after opening the season with four consecutive wins. The Royals host Covington Latin Thursday evening.

Lady Royals win again at the Maysville Country Club

The Mason County Lady Royals defeated Pendleton County and Bourbon County today at the Maysville Country Club. Christian Arn was the medalist with a 41. The Lady Royals junior varsity team beat Pendleton County. Sarah Fite and Taylor Douglas led the way with 52s.

Lady Royals win, Royals second in tri-matches at MCC

The Mason County Lady Royals won a tri-match today at the Maysville Country Club today. The Lady Royals had a total of 180. Peebles was second at 218 and West Union was third at 224. Christen Cropper was a co-medalist with a 42. Tiara Harris followed with a 43. The Lady Royals improve their record to 4-1.
The Mason County Royals finished second in a tri-match against Bourbon County and West Union on the front nine at the Maysville Country Club. The Royals (5-1-1) were led by Tanner Walton with a 39 and Jackson Frame with a 40.

Royals and Lady Royals 3rd in weekend tourneys

The Mason County Royals finished third in the Mason County/St. Patrick Invitational at the Maysville Country Club Saturday. Twenty-five teams played in the tournament. Bourbon County won with a total of 317. Grant County was second at 318. Mason County had a total of 323. Bradley Litzinger led the Royals with a 77. St. Patrick senior Russell Rigg shot a 76 and finished in eighth place.
The Mason County Lady Royals took third place in the Scott County Invitational at Canewood Golf Course in Georgetown Saturday. The Lady Royals were led by Tiara Harris with a 90.

Lady Royals varsity and middle school take first place in Blue Jay XC Invitational

The Mason County Lady Royals varsity and middle school teams opened the season Saturday with first place finishes in the Blue Jay Cross Country Invitational in Ripley. All five varsity girls medalled- Valerie Rice in second place, Julia Woods third, Sarah Bellingham 10th, Raylee Kirkland 11th and Carley Moore 12th. The girls middle school team was led by Sierra Anderson in third place and Cara Woods in fourth place. The boys varsity was led by Nick Robinson's second place finish and Nathan Woods in ninth place.

Royals rally and hang on for a 34-28 win over Montgomery County

The Mason County Royals rallied from a seven-point third quarter deficit and were able to hang on for a 34-28 win over the Montgomery County Indians Friday night in Mt. Sterling. The game was tied 14-14 at the half. Montgomery County took a 21-14 lead with 6:29 left in the third quarter. Mason County scored back-to-back touchdowns to lead 28-21 late in the third quarter. Montgomery County put together a 15-play, 65-yard scoring drive to tie the game at 28-all. Mason County went back in front on a touchdown pass from Neal Pawsat to Jordan Gilbert. After a penalty, Gilbert missed the PAT. Montgomery County advanced to the Royals' 44 yard line, but a couple of penalties on the Indians and a defensive stop on fourth down gave the ball back to Mason County with 2:36 left. The Royals picked up a first down and ran out the clock. Josh Harris rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Pawsat completed 15-of-25 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw two interceptions. Gilbert had seven receptions for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Mason County's fourth touchdown of the game- a four-yard run by Xavia Shurn- was set up by a 71-yard run by Troy Chenault. On the previous play, Xavion Johnson intercepted a Montgomery County pass in the end zone. Shurn also has an interception and recovered an onside kick. Mason County (1-1) has an open date on September 3. The Royals play their home opener September 10 against the Bourbon County Colonels.

Royals vs. Indians tonight in Mt. Sterling

The Mason County Royals, ranked No. 2 in Class AAA, play the Class AAAAA Montgomery County Indians tonight at Cunningham Field in Mt. Sterling. Mason County is coming off a 21-14 season-opening loss to the Danville Admirals. Montgomery County defeated the Harrison County Thorobreds 32-20 in the 63rd Recreation Bowl. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. The game will be on WFTM-FM and online at www.soft96.com.





Notes:
  • Cunningham Field has a new artificial surface;
  • Mason County will sport a new look tonight. The Royals will wear white pants with white jerseys. The team usually wears blue pants on the road;
  • Mason County leads the series 7-4 and has won the last seven meetings. The Royals beat the Indians 35-14 last season. It was 7-7 at halftime.

Lady Royals blank Bath County 3-0

The Mason County Lady Royals evened their record at 2-2 with a 3-0 victory over the Bath County Lady Wildcats. Amrita Srinivasan, Jessica Shotwell and Mariah Scilley each scored a goal. Lady Royals goalie Chelsi Comberger got her second shutout of the season. Mason County is back in action Monday night at Ripley.

Royals beat Scott Co., Lady Royals lose to Lady Cardinals

Tanner Walton fired a one-under-par 35 to win medalist honors and lead the Mason County Royals to a 154-166 win over the Scott County Cardinals Wednesday at Canewood Golf Course in Georgetown. Jackson Frame followed with a 37. Bradley Litzinger and Tyler Lippert had 39s.
The Royals are 4-0-1.
The Mason County Lady Royals lost to the Scott County Lady Cardinals by five shots. The Lady Royals' 161 was their lowest score of the season. Christian Arn led the way with a 38. Tiara Harris and Lauren Vice had 41s. Christen Cropper and Bridgit Morris shot 42s. The Lady Royals are 2-1.

Mason Co. volleyball team gets first varsity win

The Mason County Lady Royals volleyball team, playing its first varsity season, picked up its first win tonight- a 2-0 victory over the Augusta Lady Panthers in Augusta. The scores were 25-19 and 25-11. The Lady Royals (1-2) host Rowan County September 7.

Lady Saints and Saints sweep West Union

The St. Patrick Lady Saints and Saints swept West Union in a girl-boy soccer doubleheader tonight at the Tom Browning Boys and Girls Club. The Lady Saints won 6-0. The Saints blanked the Dragons 8-0.

The Mason County Royals finished in sixth place out of 16 teams in the Madison Central Invitational Saturday at Battlefield Golf Club in Richmond. Bradley Litzinger led Mason County with a 77. Jackson Frame followed with a 79. Dee Hampton shot an 84. Connor Osborne had an 86. Tanner Walton shot an 87 and Tyler Lippert had a 92.

Royals lose season opener to Danville 21-14

Junior running back Patrick Brand rushed for 234 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Danville Admirals to a 21-14 victory over the Mason County Royals in the season opener Friday night at Danville. Mason County scored first on a 53-yard pass from Neal Pawsat to Xavia Shurn, but Danville scored two touchdowns in the second quarter and led 14-7 at the half. Mason County tied the game on a 23-yard pass from Pawsat to Jordan Gilbert with 36 seconds left in the third quarter. Two plays and 27 seconds later, Danville regained the lead on a 72-yard touchdown run by Brand. Mason County' final drive of the game began on the Royals' 12 yard line with 2:34 to play. The Royals advanced to the Danville 24 yard line, but Pawsat was sacked at the 35 yard line with 19 seconds left. On the final play, Pawsat's pass, intended for Gilbert, was incomplete as time expired. It was the 300th career win for Danville Coach Sam Harp. Pawsat completed 13 of 24 passes for 171 yards. Gilbert had nine receptions for 74 yards and has 1,0444 career receiving yards. Mason County plays at Montgomery County next Friday.

Mason Co. boys and girls golf teams beat Bishop Brossart

The Mason County boys and girls golf teams both defeated Bishop Brossart Thursday at A.J. Jolly Golf Course in Campbell County. The Royals won 159-172 to improve their record to 3-0-1. Jackson Frame was the medalist with a 36. Bradley Litzinger followed by a 40. Connor Osborne had a 41 and Tanner Walton and Dee Hampton shot 43s.
The Lady Royals won 170-260. Christen Cropper took medalist honors with a 40. Lauren Vice, Tiara Harris and Bridgit Morris shot 44s. Christian Arn had a 47 and Sarah Fite shot a 51.

Royals open the season tonight at Danville

The Mason County Royals open the football season tonight against the Danville Admirals in Danville. Mason County is coming off an 11-1 season. Danville was 5-7 last year- the Admirals' first losing season since 1985. Mason County routed Danville 48-21 in the season opener last year. The Royals led 41-7 at the half. Mason County is No.1 in the Herald-Leader preseason coaches' Class AAA poll and No. 2 in the Bluegrasspreps.com Class AAA preseason rankings. Lady Royals beat Pendleton Co, Royals tie Wildcats

The Mason County Lady Royals defeated the Pendleton County Lady Wildcats 170-188 Wednesday at Pendleton County Country Club. Bridgit Morris and Christen Cropper shot 41s and tied for medalist. Tiara Harris and Christian Arn had 44s, and Lauren Vice shot a 45. The Lady Royals are 1-0.
The Mason County Royals and the Pendleton County Wildcats tied 162-162. The Royals (2-0-1), were led by Tanner Walton's 39. Bradley Litzinger shot a 40, Connor Osborne had a 41 and Dee Hampton shot a 42.

The Mason County boys junior varsity and freshman teams were winners in tri-matches Tuesday night at Laurel Oaks Golf Club. Tyler Lippert and J.C. Chapman led the way with 44s.
The Lady Royals junior varsity beat North Adams by 12 shots. The Lady Royals were led by Brianna Littleton with a 53 and Jordan Frodge shot a 63.

Miller scores 24 points in UK's104-75 victory

Darius Miller scored 24 points and the University of Kentucky closed out its trip to Canada win a 104-75 exhibition victory over the University of Windsor Tuesday. Miller was 10-of-12 from the field including 3-of-4 on three-point shots. He made his only free throw and had three rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Miller scores 20 points in exhibition win

Darius Miller scored 20 points in the University of Kentucky's 96-68 exhibition win over the Western University Mustangs Monday night. Miller had three dunks, three assists, five blocks and five steals. The Wildcats close out their Canadian trip today against the University of Windsor. UK beat Windsor 95-62 Sunday night.

Royals beat Harrison County by 20 strokes

The Mason County Royals beat the Harrison County Thorobreds 143-163 Monday at the Cynthiana Country Club. The score was Mason County's lowest of the season. Bradley Litzinger led the way with a 5-under-par 31. Tanner Walton shot a 34, Jackson Frame had a 38 and Tyler Lippert shot a 40. The Mason County girls junior varsity team defeated Harrison County 233-273.

Mason County Lady Royals Picture Day


Lady Royals have season best score, finish 7th in Villa Madonna Invitational

The Mason County Lady Royals had a season best score of 332 and finished in seventh place at the Villa Madonna Invitational. The field of 25 teams included six top teams from Cincinnati and seven of the top eight from Kentucky. Mason County scores include: Lauren Vice 80, Christen Cropper 81, Bridgit Morris 83, Tiara Harris 88 and Christian Arn 93.

Miller has a double-double in UK's exhibition game win

Darius Miller scored 18 points and had 12 rebounds and the University of Kentucky opened its three-game exhibition trip to Canada Sunday night by routing the University of Windsor 95-62. Miller also had four assists, two blocks and one steal. Freshman Brandon Knight led the Wildcats in scoring with 31 points. Kentucky plays Western Ontario tonight at 7 o'clock.

Deron Feldhaus wins Mason Co. Open by one shot

Deron Feldhaus sank a long downhill birdie putt on No. 18 to win the Mason County Open by one shot over Troy Grooms today at Laurel Oaks Golf Club. Feldhaus began the day with a three-shot lead over Grooms, but the two were tied after Grooms fired a 33 on the front nine including an eagle on No. 9. Grooms had a one-shot lead with two holes to play. On the par 5 17th, Feldhaus had an eagle and Grooms had a birdie and they were tied again. The birdie on No. 18 gave Feldhaus his third Mason County Open title. He also won the tournament in 1998 and 2001. Feldhaus shot a 2-under-par 70 today and had a 54-hole total of 13-under 201. Grooms fired a 68 today for a total of 202. Eric Richmond took third place at 208. Matthew Grayson shot a 6-under-66 today and ended up in fourth place at 210. Kenton Station Golf Course won the Inter-City Trophy with 24 points. Laurel Oaks Golf Club was second with 22.5 points and the Maysville Country Club was third with 13 points. Ross Smith is General Manager and Director of Golf at new course in Michigan

Maysville native Ross Smith is the General Manager and Director of Golf at The Golf Club at Harbor Shores, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course in Michigan. The Golf Club at Harbor Shores, located along the shores of Lake Michigan, opened all 18 holes on July 1. Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and Johnny Miller played in the grand opening event- Harbor Shores Champions for a Change Golf Challenge on August 10. The 2012 and 2014 Senior PGA Championships will be played at The Golf Club of Harbor Shores. Smith served as the golf professional at the Maysville Country Club in the 1980s. Feldhaus has three-shot lead after two rounds of the Mason County Open

Deron Feldhaus, who began the day with a two-shot lead, shot a 4-under-par 68 today at the Maysville Country Club and has a three-shot lead after two rounds of the 16th Mason County Open. Feldhaus is 11-under for the tournament (131). Troy Grooms fired a 66 today and is in second place at 134. Eric Richmond is in the third place at 136. Eric Schumacher is in fourth place at 138. The final round will be played Sunday at Laurel Oaks Golf Club.

Royals lose to Ashland 36-14 in scrimmage

The Mason County Royals got off to a quick start but lost to the Ashland Tomcats 36-14 in a three-period scrimmage at Mason County tonight. Mason County recovered an onside kick and Josh Harris ran about 40 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. Ashland answered with 28 consecutive points before Neal Pawsat threw a touchdown pass to Jordan Gilbert in the third period. Mason County opens the season next Friday night at Danville.

Feldhaus fires a 63, leads the Mason County Open

Deron Feldhaus shot a 7-under-par 63 today at Kenton Station Golf Course and has the lead after the first round of the 16th Mason County Open. Feldhaus, a two-time champion, had seven birdies. Josh Weber and Eric Richmond are tied for second place, two shots back. Five-time champion Eric Schumacher is three shots off the lead. Eleven golfers broke par. Defending champion Joe Bigelow and five others shot even par 70s. The second round will be played Saturday at the Maysville Country Club. The final round is Sunday at Laurel Oaks Golf Club.

Local high school volleyball season begins tonight

The St. Patrick and Mason County volleyball teams play their season openers tonight. The St. Patrick Lady Saints, coached by Julie McKay, host the Bourbon County Lady Colonels at 6 p.m. The Mason County Lady Royals begin their first varsity season with a home match against the Bracken County Lady Bears at 7 p.m. The Lady Royals, coached by Meredith Fraysure, will play their home matches at the Mason County Intermediate School.

16th Mason County Open is this weekend

The 16th Mason County Open begins Friday at Kenton Station Golf Course. Maysville Country Club will host the second round Saturday. The final round will be played Sunday at Laurel Oaks Golf Club. Joe Bigelow is the defending champion.

Jason Otter's School of Basketball will hold camp in Maysville August 28

Jason Otter's School of Basketball will conduct a camp at the St. Patrick Gymnasium Saturday, August 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The camp is for boys and girls in grades four through 12 and is limited to the first 50. More than 30 players have already signed up. The fee is $70. According to its website, pro trainer Jason Otter developed the Otterbasketball system that "combines modern exercise science with good old fashioned hard work." Lady Royals shoot season low score, take 5th in Notre Dame Invitational

The Mason County Lady Royals shot a season low score of 342 and finished in fifth place in the Notre Dame Invitational today at Twin Oaks Golf and Plantation Club. Tiara Harris led the Lady Royals with a 78. Harris was seventh in the individual competition. Lauren Vice had an 85. Christen Cropper 89, Bridgit Morris 91 and Christian Arn 93.

Royals beat Harrison County at MCC

Tanner Walton fired a 4-under-par 32 to lead the Mason County Royals to a 23-shot win over the Harrison County Thorobreds today at the Maysville Country Club. The Mason County junior varsity boys and girls teams also defeated Harrison County.

Rigg is medalist, Saints take 3rd place in Bluegrass Conference Championship tourney

St. Patrick senior Russell Rigg shot a 1-under-par 34 to claim medalist honors and the Saints took third place in the Bluegrass Conference Championship tournament today at Shady Brook Golf Club near Paris. Rigg won the tournament by seven shots.

Ludwig and Gunning win Kenton Station Ladies 2-Day Tournament

Peggy Ludwig and Kim Gunning teamed up to win the Kenton Station Golf Course Ladies 2-Day Tournament. Ludwig and Gunning shot a 70 Sunday and had a 36-hole total of 141. Lisa Houchens and Barb Kohls finished second at 143. Suzi Robinson and Rachel Herman, and 2009 champions Kelly Connor and Libby Moses tied for third place, three shots behind the winners. Mason Co. 10 & under girls take 7th place at AAU National Championship

The Mason County Lady Royals fifth grade 10 and under basketball team took seventh place at the AAU National Championship by forfeit today at Walt Disney World. Mason County's opponent, Queens Express from New York, was a no show. Boston Showstoppers, the team that beat Mason County in the Elite 8, won the National Championship.

Lady Royals 2nd, Royals 4th in golf tourneys

The Mason County Lady Royals finished second in the Mason County Invitational Tournament at the Maysville Country Club, while the Royals took fourth place in the Bath County Invitational Tournament at Old Silo Golf Course in Mt. Sterling today. The Lady Royals were led by Christian Arn who tied for third place with an 85. The Royals were led by Jackson Frame with a 75.

Mason Co. girls 10 and under team falls to Virginia Hurricanes 26-23

The Mason County Lady Royals fifth grade 10 and under basketball team lost to the Virginia Hurricanes 26-23 in the AAU National Championship tournament this afternoon. The Lady Royals were outscored 10-1 at the free throw line. Mason County will close out tournament play Friday at 12:30 p.m. vs. Queens Express from New York in the seventh place game.

The Mason County Lady Royals fifth grade 10 under and basketball team was knocked out of the winners bracket in the AAU National Championship tournament with a 34-21 loss to the Boston Showstoppers this morning. The Lady Royals are now in a four-team tournament to determine fifth through eight place. Mason County plays the Virginia Hurricanes today at 1:50 p.m.

Mason Co. 10 and under girls advance to Elite Eight of National Championship

The Mason County Lady Royals fifth grade 10 and under girls basketball team advanced to the Elite Eight of the AAU National Championship tournament with a 28-20 victory over OEB Rampage Remix from Florida this afternoon. The Lady Royals play Boston Showstoppers from Massachusetts Thursday at 8:30 a.m.

Seventy-four young golfers braved the heat and humidity today to play in the Annual Bryan Conway Memorial Junior Golf Tournament at Kenton Station Golf Course. Bradley Liztinger fired a two-under-par 68 to win the boys' 15-16 division. Christen Cropper won the girls' 15-16 division with a nine-hole total of even par 36. Lady Royals win second straight golf tournament

The Mason County Lady Royals won their second tournament in as many days with a two-shot victory over Boyle County today at the Rowan County Invitational Tournament at Eagle Trace Golf Course. The Lady Royals were led by Lauren Vice with an 80. She was the second runner-up in the individual competition. Christian Arn was the fourth runner-up with an 81. Tiara Harris and Christen Cropper had 91s and Bridgit Morris shot a 93.

Mason Co. girls 10 and under team loses to Tennessee team 31-16

The Mason County Lady Royals fifth grade 10 and under basketball team lost to Music City Magic from Tennessee 31-16 today in pool play of the AAU National Championship tournament at Walt Disney World. Mason County goes 2-1 in pool play and moves into the tournament bracket as a No. 2 seed. The Lady Royals play No. 3 seed Matrix-Green from Washington D.C. Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.

Russell Rigg wins Catholic Classic Golf Championship

Russell Rigg won the Diocese of Covington's Catholic Classic Golf Championship Monday at Hickory Sticks Golf Club in Campbell County. Rigg fired a one-under-par 70 and won by eight shots. St. Patrick finished sixth in the team competition. The tournament included all of the Catholic high schools in the Diocese. Other members of the St. Patrick golf team include Harrison Applegate, Thomas Purdon and William McKay. The Saints are back in action Thursday in the Bath County Invitational at Old Silo Golf Course in Mt. Sterling.

Frame leads Royals to season-opening win

Freshman Jackson Frame was the tournament medalist with a 76 and lead the Mason County Royals to a 17-shot win in the Beechwood Invitational Monday at Fort Mitchell Country Club.
Junior Bradley Litzinger was the second runner-up with a 79. Junior Tanner Walton shot an 83. Sophomore Dee Hampton had a 94, and Seventh grader Tyler Lippert shot a 95.

The Mason County Lady Royals opened the season with a 23-shot victory at the Beechwood Invitational Monday at Fort Mitchell Country Club. Senior Tiara Harris led the Lady Royals with an 81. She was the runner-up in the individual competition. Freshman Lauren Vice was the fourth runner-up with an 87. Senior Bridgit Morris shot a 91. Seventh grader Christian Arn had a 92 and Junior Christen Cropper shot a 94.
