Mason County is No. 17 in the first Class 4A RPI rankings of the football season

The Kentucky High School Athletics Association on Monday released the first RPI rankings for high school football teams and the Mason County Royals are No. 17 in Class 4A.

The rankings don't mean much this early in the season, but the RPI at the conclusion of the regular season will determine home field advantage for the third round of the playoffs and the state semifinal games.

Mason County's RPI is .59039. The Royals' opponent this week, Rowan County, has an RPI of .37167. That's 35th in Class 4A.

The RPI formula uses the team's winning percentage, the opponent's winning percentage and the opponents' opponents' winning percentage.
