High school track races not run in lanes or when two or more competitors are assigned to a single lane will be recalled in the first 50 meters when contact occurs between runners.
The National Federation of High Schools decided that 50 meters is sufficient in calling a fair start beginning in the 2025 school year. The previous rule set the mark for a fair start at 100 meters.
