Royals' rally comes up two points short in loss to Walton-Verona

The Mason County Royals mounted another furious rally, but came up short in an 86-84 loss to the Walton-Verona Bearcats on Saturday in the third place game of the Mason County Invitational Tournament.

Mason County trailed 21-12 in the first quarter before going on a 15-4 run to lead 27-25 only to trail 47-42 at halftime.

Walton-Verona was up 74-58 with 53 seconds left in the third quarter and 75-61 with 7:22 remaining in the game.

The Royals tied the game at 82-82 with 1:21. Down 86-84, Mason County missed a shot from the top of the key at the buzzer.

After struggling on the boards in Friday night's game, the Royals outrebounded the Bearcats 36-26, but only made 2-of-17 shots from three-point range.

Julian Dixon poured in 31 points for Walton-Verona (10-4).

Mason County sophomore Jake Feldhaus scored a career-hign 25 points before fouling out with 7:22 left in the game. He was 11-of-16 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line.

Blake Reed scored 21 of his 23 points in the second half. Cayden Reed had 16 points, 11 rebounds and five assists and Cole Horch contributed 10 points and seven rebounds.

Blake Reed, Feldhaus, Dixon and Dixon's teammate, Aaron Gutman were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Mason County (7-5) will host the Rowan County Vikings on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in a quarterfinal round game of the Kentucky 2A Championships Section 6 Tournament. The Royals, the defending 2A state champions, lost to Rowan County 86-77 in the season opener on November 28.

In the other games Saturday, Scott edged Tates Creek 58-57 in the seventh place game, Pike County Central topped Augusta 71-67 in the fifth place game and North Oldham defeated Campbell County 68-45 in the championship game.

Lady Royals suffer a heartbreaking loss to Paintsville

The Mason County Lady Royals suffered a heartbreaking loss Saturday in the seventh place game of the Lady Panther Invitational Tournament in Pikeville. 

The Paintsville Lady Tigers made two free throws with three- tenths of a second on the clock to edge the Lady Royals 56-54.

Mason County led 41-30 with 5:38 left in the third quarter and were up 43-35 before Paintsville scored 13 straight points to begin a 16-2 run that gave the Lady Tigers a 51-45 lead with 3:46 remaining in the game. 

Paintsville was up 53-50 with 2:10 to go. Lexi Young made back-to-back layups to give the Lady Royals a 54-53 lead with 1:35 to play. 

Young fouled out with 1:04 left. Paintsville hit 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game.

Mason County missed a layup with 15 seconds remaining.

Paintsville played for the last shot, drew a foul and hit the game-winning free throws.

Young scored 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Carlee Buttery made three 3-pointers and scored 13 points and Olivia Hughes finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Lady Royals (7-5) will play the Rowan County Lady Vikings Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a quarterfinal round game of the Kentucky 2A Championships Section 6 Tournament at The Fieldhouse.

Royals lose to Campbell County

Blake Reed for two of his 20 points

The Mason County Royals were outrebounded 27-20 and outscored 15-0 on second-chance points in a 69-58 loss to the Campbell County Camels on Friday night in the semifinals of the Mason County Invitational Tournament.

Campbell County had 10 offensive rebounds to just three for Mason County.

There were five ties and three lead changes before Campbell County (8-1) moved out to a 50-40 lead with five minutes left in the third quarter.

Mason County (7-4) pulled to within three points at 58-55 with 4:40 remaining in the game, but the Camels answered with nine straight points to begin an 11-1 run that pushed the lead to 69-56 with only 54 seconds to play.

Blake Reed scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Royals. 

Jake Feldhaus followed with 12 points and Cayden Reed had 11 points and six assists. 

Mason County will play Walton-Verona in the third place game on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

Campbell County will face North Oldham in the championship game at 4 p.m. North Oldham beat Walton-Verona 70-58.

In the other two games on Friday, Augusta edged Scott 65-62 and Pike County Central defeated Tates Creek 73-57.

Scott and Tates Creek will meet in the seventh place game on Saturday at 11 a.m.

The fifth place game at 2:30 p.m. will pit Augusta vs. Pike County Central.

Lady Royals fall to E-Town

The Mason County Lady Royals led 14-6 at the end of the first quarter, but were outscored 20-6 in the second quarter and lost to the Elizabethtown Panthers 59-43 on Friday in the consolation bracket of the Lady Panther Invitational Tournament at Pikeville.

Amirah Reed was the Lady Royals' leading scorer with 11 points.

Lexi Young scored eight points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Olivia Hughes also scored eight points.

Mason County (7-4) will play the Paintsville Lady Tigers in the seventh place game on Saturday at noon.

Hinson's buzzer-beater gives Augusta a win over Scott

Kylan Hinson hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Augusta Panthers over the Scott Eagles 65-62 on Friday in the consolation bracket of the Mason County Invitational Tournament.

Hinson finished with 18 points.

Augusta will play Pike County Central in the fifth place game on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Jaylen Ridgon scored 28 points to lead Pike County Central to a 73-57 victory over Tates Creek.

Royals defeat Tates Creek

Blake Reed scored 27 points, Braylon Hamilton made five 3-pointers and scored 17 points and Jake Feldhaus had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds as the Mason County Royals beat the Tates Creek Commodores 77-57 on Thursday night in the Mason County Invitational Tournament.

Mason County (7-3) led 26-15 with 4:50 left in the second quarter. Tates Creek (1-9) reeled off eight straight points to pull within three points. The Royals answered with a 31-8 run to lead 57-31 late in the third quarter. 

Mason County will play the Campbell County Camels in the semifinals on Friday at 7 p.m. Campbell County defeated Pike County Central 68-54.

In the other games on Thursday, Walton-Verona beat Augusta 74-63 and North Oldham routed Scott 88-54.

Saints get first win of the season

Amari Myrick scored 20 points and Abi Ignacio followed with 17 points to lead the St. Patrick Saints to their first win of the season, 49-48 over the Robertson County Black Devils on Thursday in the consolation game of the River City Holiday Classic at Ripley.

Gabe Sammons added 10 points for the Saints who avenged a 76-34 loss to Robertson County on December 5.

Lady Royals' winning streak snapped by a loss to Pikeville

The Mason County Lady Royals had their three-game winning streak snapped by a 75-30 loss to the Pikeville Lady Panthers on Thursday in the opening game of the Lady Panther Invitational at Pikeville.

The quarter scores were 28-9, 52-17 and 67-27.

Ms. Basketball candidate and Southern Mississippi signee Trinity Rowe scored 27 points for Pikeville (7-1)

Lexi Young had 14 points and six rebounds for Mason County.

The Lady Royals (7-3) will play Elizabethtown on Friday at 2 p.m. in the consolation bracket.

Myrick scores 21 in Saints loss to Ripley

Amari Myrick scored a game-high 21 points, but the St. Patrick Saints lost to the Ripley Blue Jays 64-36 on Wednesday night in the semifinals of the River City Holiday Classic at Ripley.

Lady Royals cruise past Newport

The Mason County Lady Royals made 15 3-pointers (12 in the first half) and routed the Newport Ladycats 76-30 Friday night at the Lady Royals Gym.

The Lady Royals (7-2) led 32-7 and 61-22 at halftime en route to their third straight victory.

Lexi Young scored 16 points to pace Mason County. Amirah Reed made four 3-pointers and scored 14 points, Carlee Buttery hit three 3-pointers and had 13 points and Olivia Hughes made four three-pointers for her 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. 

The Lady Royals shot 46.2 percent and 46.9 percent from three-point range. 

Mason County will play Pikeville on December 28 at the Lady Panthers Invitational in Pikeville.

Royals' comeback falls short in loss to Owen County

For the second straight game the Mason County Royals fell behind by 23 points, but unlike Thursday, they were unable to complete a comeback and lost to the Owen County Rebels 70-60 on Friday in the fifth place game of the Legacy Nissan Dribble Drive Challenge at South Laurel.

Mason County (6-3) trailed 48-25 in the third quarter. The Royals used a 14-1 run to close to within 10 at 49-39.

Owen County (6-5) pushed the lead back to 55-41 before Braylon Hamilton made back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the deficit to eight, but the Rebels answered with seven straight points to make the score 62-47.

The Royals closed to within 10 at 65-55 with 1:14 to go and with eight at 68-60 with 32 seconds remaining.

Owen County shot 61.5 percent from the field including 6-of-10 from behind the arc.

Mason County shot 34.4 percent from the field including 11-of-33 on 3-pointers.

Brax Ward, a 6-foot-9 senior, had 25 points and 10 rebounds for Owen County.

Blake Reed made five 3-pointers and led Mason County in scoring with 22 points. Hamilton hit five 3-pointers and scored 19 points. Hamilton was named to the All-Tournament Team. Jake Feldhaus had 10 points and six rebounds.

The Royals will play the Tates Creek Commodores on December 28 in the Mason County Invitational.

Lady Saints lose to Robertson County

The St. Patrick Lady Saints closed out the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule with a 65-33 loss to the Robertson County Lady Devils on Thursday night at Robertson County.

Lillian Klee scored 18 points and Emma Gallenstein added 11 points for St. Patrick (1-5).

Ruby Gay led Robertson County (3-6) in scoring with 21 points, Krysta Hamm followed with 17 and Lilly Monroe tossed in 11.

The Lady Saints' next game will be on January 6 against Robertson County in the 10th Region All "A" Classic.

The Lady Devils will travel to Paris on Friday night to play the Bourbon County Lady Colonels.

Royals rally from 23 down to beat Harlan

The Mason County Royals rallied from a 23-point deficit to beat the Harlan Green Dragons 75-70 on Thursday afternoon in the consolation bracket semifinals of the Legacy Nissan Dribble Drive Challenge at South Laurel.

The Royals trailed 42-29 at halftime and 54-31 in the third quarter, but ended the third quarter on a 26-4 run.

Mason County outscored Harlan 18-10 in the fourth quarter.

Braylon Hamilton and Cayden Reed scored 16 points apiece. Hamilton was 6-of-8 from the field including 4-of-5 on 3-pointers. Reed dished out five assists.

Landon Scilley scored 13 points and Jake Feldhaus had a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Harlan senior guard Kyler McLendon made six 3-pointers and scored 34 points.

Royals unable to hold 15-point lead and lose to CAL

The Mason County Royals squandered a 15-point first half lead and lost to the Christian Academy of Louisville Centurions 65-61 on Wednesday night in the quarterfinal round of the Legacy Nissan Dribble Drive Challenge at South Laurel.

The loss snapped Mason County's five-game winning streak.

The Royals (5-2) were up 29-14 in the second quarter and 35-26 at halftime, but were outscored 39-26 in the second half including 22-14 in the fourth quarter.

There were three ties and nine lead changes in the game. 

CAL (5-3) scored 27 points off Mason County's 17 turnovers.

Blake Reed led Mason County in scoring with 18 points.Braylon Hamilton and Landon Scilley followed with 11 points apiece. Scilley had a team-high six rebounds.

The Royals will play Harlan in the consolation bracket on Thursday at 2:15 p.m.

Lady Royals rout Woodford County

Amirah Reed and Lexi Young combined for 41 points to lead the Mason County Lady Royals to a 69-50 win over the Woodford County Lady Jackets on Monday night in Versailles.

Reed scored a career-high 22 points and Young matched her career-high with 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds.

There were four lead changes and one tie in the first quarter.

After the tie at 9-9, Mason County scored nine straight points, the start of a 30-3 run to end the first half.

A 9-0 run gave the Lady Royals a 49-19 lead with 3:42 remaining in the third quarter.

Mason County's biggest lead was 53-22 with 2:45 to go in the third quarter.

The Lady Royals (5-2) will host Lloyd Memorial on Wednesday night.

Mason County wins Bad to the Bow archery tournament

The Mason County archery team won the Bad to the Bow tournament Saturday at Fleming County with a score of 3,246.

Montgomery County was the runner-up (3,224) and Fleming County finished in third place (3,209).

Mason County junior Laurelle Setters was the individual champion with a score of 290 out of a possible 300. She had 22 Tens.

Two other Mason County archers  Bryce Pollitt and Dillon Mitchell  finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Both shot 284. Pollitt had 18 Tens, Mitchell had 17 Tens.

Mason County girls' wrestling program takes third place at Lafayette

The Mason County girls' wrestling team, competing in its first-ever team dual, finished third out of 12 teams at the Lafayette 5 Star Classic in Lexington on Friday night.

Brooklyn Workman, Chandon Lee and Autumn Jackson had podium finishes.

Lady Royals' winning streak snapped by loss to Portsmouth

The Mason County Lady Royals had their four-game winning streak snapped by a 62-36 loss to the Portsmouth Lady Trojans on Saturday night in Portsmouth.

The Lady Royals trailed 21-4 at the end of the first quarter and 44-12 at halftime.

Mason County (4-2) was led in scoring by Carlee Buttery with seven points.

The Lady Royals will travel to Versailles on Monday night to play Woodford County.

Royals beat Scott for fifth straight win

Blake Reed scored 28 points and pulled down five rebounds and Cayden Reed had 18 points, five rebounds, two assists and six steals as the Mason County Royals ran their winning streak to five games with a 74-55 victory over the Scott Eagles on Friday night in Taylor Mill.

Jake Feldhaus grabbed 15 rebounds and scored nine points. 

Scott entered the game shooting 49 percent from the field, but was held to 36 percent on 18-of-50.

Mason County (5-1) will play Christian Academy of Louisville on Wednesday night in the Legacy Nissan Dribble Drive Challenge at South Laurel.

The Lady Royals will celebrate 50 seasons on basketball of February 9

The Mason County Lady Royals basketball program is inviting all former players, coaches and support personnel to a celebration of 50 seasons of varsity basketball. 

The celebration is scheduled between the junior varsity and varsity games vs. Nicholas County at The Fieldhouse on February 9. 

This is the Lady Royals' 50th season. 1974-75 was the first season.

Lady Royals rally to beat Pendleton County

After trailing 22-14 at halftime, the Mason County Lady Royals outscored the Pendleton County Lady Wildcats 47-29 in the second half and ran their winning streak to four games with a 61-51 victory Monday night at the Lady Royals Gym.

The Lady Royals outscored the Lady Panthers 25-12 in the third quarter.

Lexi Young had a career-high 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Olivia Hughes had a double-double 15 points and 11 rebounds and Amirah Reed added 11 points.

The Lady Royals (4-1) will play at Portsmouth on Saturday night.

St. Patrick and Covington Latin split a girls' and boys' DH

St. Patrick and Covington Latin split a girls' and boys' doubleheader at The Shamrock on Monday night.

The Lady Saints picked up their first win of the season. Lillian Klee scored a game-high 17 points to lead St. Patrick to a 35-24 victory.

Amari Myrick poured in a game-high 25 points, but the Saints lost to the Trojans 65-39.

The Lady Saints will play at Newport on Saturday.

The Saints will play at West Union on Saturday night.

Mason County wrestlers fifth at Warhawk Duals

With a 3-2 record the Mason County wrestling team finished in fifth place at the Warhawk Duals in Georgetown on Saturday.

The Royals defeated Scott County 42-40, Western Hills 42-40 and Henry Clay 48-30 and lost to Great Crossing 72-6 and Bullitt Central 48-33.

Barry Gifford (175) went 5-0 with five pins.

Colton Kinney (215/285) had two wins while wrestling up a weight class most of the day.

Izley Morales (190/215) and Taten Carrington (190/215) each had a pin while competing up a weight class.

Carson Ginn (157), Hunter Truesdell (150) and Bryson Carrington (120) had two wins apiece. 

The boys will be back in action Friday night at West Carter. The girls travel to Taylor County on Saturday.

Mason County archery team is runner-up at Robertson County, Dillon Mitchell individual champion

The Mason County Royals archery team was the runner-up at the Robertson County Winter Shoot on Saturday.

The Royals finished 42 points behind the Harrison County Thorobreds. 

Mason County freshman Dillon Mitchell was the individual champion. He fired a 289 with 19 Tens.

Royals beat LCA for fourth straight win

Blake Reed made five 3-pointers and scored 23 points, Braylon Hamilton tossed in 16 points and Cayden Reed had 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals as the Mason County Royals defeated the Lexington Christian Academy Eagles in the Mike Murphy Champions Classic at The Fieldhouse on Saturday night.

Mason County (4-1) took control of the game with a 17-0 run in the first quarter and led 63-38 after three quarters on the way to its fourth straight win.

The Royals shot 56.7% from the field in the first half including 7-of-16 (43.8%) on 3-pointers.

For the game Mason County shot 51% from the field, 34.8% from behind the arc and 15-of-18 (83.9%) from the free throw line.

The Royals' next game is Friday night at Scott.

Lady Royals rout Eastern Brown

Lexi Young had 10 points and 12 rebounds and Olivia Hughes and Carlee Buttery scored 10 points apiece as the Mason County Lady Royals ran their winning streak to three games with a 49-18 rout of the Eastern Brown Warriors in the Mike Murphy Champions Classic at The Fieldhouse on Saturday.

The Lady Royals jumped out to a 17-1 lead and were up 29-9 at halftime.

Mason County (3-1) will host the Pendleton County Lady Wildcats at the Lady Royals Gym on Monday night.

Blake Reed becomes 10th Region's all-time leading scorer and hits game winner for the Royals

A few minutes after becoming the 10th Region's all-time leading scorer, Blake Reed hit a buzzer-beater corner 3-pointer to give the Mason County Royals an 80-77 come-from-behind win over the Green County Dragons in the Mike Murphy Champions Classic at The Fieldhouse on Friday night.

After trailing by 12 points at halftime, Mason County came back to lead 55-51 in the third quarter.

The Royals would need another rally after Green County led 72-65 with 3:51 remaining in the game.

Reed started the rally with an and-1. Jake Feldhaus followed with a putback. Reed tied the game with a layup.

Greenup County scored to lead 74-72.

Reed put Mason County back in front and surpassed Tollesboro's Chris Harrison as the region's all-time leading scorer with a 3-pointer at the 1:50 mark. Cayden Reed's basket gave the Royals a 77-74 lead.

Green County tied the game with a 3-pointer with six seconds to go.

After a timeout, Mason County drove into front court and tried to go inside, but the ball went out of bounds off of Green County.

The Royals took their final timeout before Blake Reed hit the game-winning basket.

There were 11 ties and 11 lead changes in the game.

Mason County scored 33 points off Green County's 18 turnovers.

Blake Reed finished with four 3-pointers and a game-high 28 points.

Cayden Reed had 21 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Landon Scilley scored 16 points on 8-of-11 from the field.

Feldhaus scored four points and grabbed eight rebounds despite playing less than 12 minutes due to foul trouble.

Mason County (3-1) will play Lexington Christian Academy in the final game of the Mike Murphy Champions Classic on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Green County (1-3), coached by former Royal Jordan Gilbert, will play Augusta in Saturday's second game at 2:30.

Lady Royals beat Bryan Station

Amirah Reed made four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 15 points, Carlee Buttery hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points and Olivia Hughes added 10 points to lift the Mason County Lady Royals to a 45-41 victory over the Bryan Station Lady Defenders in the Mike Murphy Champions Classic at The Fieldhouse on Friday Night.

Nine of Mason County's 15 field goals were 3-pointers.

The Lady Royals (2-1) will play the Eastern Brown Lady Warriors Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Mike Murphy Champions Classic.

Royals go 1-1 in first dual wrestling meet of the season

The Mason County wrestling team went 1-1 in its first dual meet of the season Wednesday night.

The Royals defeated Bryan Station 45-12 and lost to Montgomery County 42-39 at Montgiomery County.

Ring ceremony for Royals' 2A state championship team

A ring ceremony for Mason County's 2023 2A state championship basketball team will be held prior to the Royals' home opener Friday night in the Mike Murphy Champions Classic.

Mason County won the Kentucky 2A Championships state tournament in January. The Royals edged Lexington Catholic in the championship game. 

The players and coaches will receive their championship rings before the Royals play Green County at 7:30.

The Mason County Lady Royals play Bryan Station in the opening game of the Mike Murphy Championship Classic at 6 p.m.


Royals archery team runner-up at Pendleton County Winter Warm-Up

The Mason County archery team finished second at the Pendleton County Winter Warm-Up on Saturday.

Harrison County won the tournament with a team score of 3274.  Mason County had a team score of 3257 and Pendleton County took third place (3241). 

Bryce Pollitt led the Royals with a second place finish. He had a score of 285 with 16 Tens.

Dillon Mitchell was third with a score of 281. He had 19 Tens.
