Mason County could be moving up to Class 4A in football

While it won't be official until the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Control approves football realignment in January or February, it looks like Mason County will be moving up from Class 3A to Class 4A next season.

The KHSAA on Monday released enrollment reports from the Kentucky Department of Education. The way the KHSAA uses those reports Mason County ranks 104th in boys' enrollment which would move the Royals up to Class 4A.

Based on the report, Bracken County would move up from Class 1A to Class 2A.

Schools have until December 21 to request to move up a class or drop out of district play.

The Board of Control will consider a draft alignment of teams for the 2023-2026 seasons at its next meeting on January 18.

The update from Commissioner Julian Tackett on Monday said the board may consider final approval on January 18, and the intent is to have it finalized no later than its February 22 meeting.

Mason County was in Class 4A from 2015 through 2018, Bracken County has been in Class 1A since the inception of its football program.
