Lady Royals are Class 2A state runners-up

The Mason County Lady Royals capped off an incredible season with a runner-up finish at the Class 2A Clark Pump-N-Shop State Track and Field Championships today at the University of Kentucky. It's the best finish in the history of the program.

Mercer County won both the girls' and boys' state championships. In the girls' meet, Mercer County had 81.50 points. The Lady Royals followed with 56 points and Bourbon County took third-place with 44 points.

In the boys' meet, Mercer County racked up 94 points. The Mason County Royals finished in 14th place with 17 points.

The Lady Royals were led by eighth grader Lexi Young who was second in the long jump (17-9.75), second in the high jump (5-4), third in the 100 meter dash (12-3) and third in the 200 meter dash (25.45).

Other podium finishes by Mason County athletes include:

  • AJ Barrett, tied for second in the pole vault (13-6)
  • Anthony Bozeman, fourth in the high jump (6-2) and fifth in the 110 meter hurdles (15.94)
  • Layla Henderson, fourth in the 1,600 meters (5:21.69) and third in the 3,200 meters (11:39.97)
  • Elizabeth Lavinder, eighth in the 3,200 meters (11:59.97)
  • Ava Thompson, fourth in the pole vault (9-6)
  • Sarah Payne, fifth in the pole vault (9-0)
  • The girls' 4x100 meter relay team of Karis Applegate, Madison Howard, Neveah Wright and Kenzie Gulley, fifth-place (51.18)
  • The girls' 4x800 meter relay team of Alyssa Bisotti, Paige Decker, Layla Henderson and Elizabeth Lavinder, sixth-place (10:17:54)
The Lady Royals won 6-of-6 regular season meets and the region championship.
