Kentucky politicians continue to weigh in on the issue of beginning fall high school sports during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Kentucky House Republican leadership sent a letter to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Control today showing support for the decision to move forward with fall sports.
Earlier this week, the Kentucky Department of Education sent a letter to the KHSAA Board of Control asking the board to consider more guidance.
The House Republican leadership letter said, "the Kentucky Department of Education appears determined to undermine the work of the KHSAA."
The letter concluded by saying, "Again, we appreciate the KHSAA's work on this issue and the Board of Control's efforts to make the best-informed decision possible for Kentucky's student athletes."
During his media briefing this afternoon, Governor Andy Beshear defended the KBE's request for more guidance.
"If we're going to play high touch fall sports at a time when we have the most cases daily and by just about any average that we've ever had in this virus, you'd think it's pretty reasonable for a board of education to say, 'what are your specific guidelines and plans to protect the student-athletes.' " Beshear said.
Fall sports are set to begin next week. The golf season is already underway.
