A look back at Mason County football season openers

The Mason County Royals open the pandemic-delayed 2020 football season Friday night at home against the Grant County Braves. Mason County has a 20-21 record in season openers. Here is a rundown of those games with a few highlights from the victories:

1979

Bath County 30, Mason County 0

1980

Mason County 27, Bath County 6

Greg Zeigler returned a fumble 41 yards for a touchdown. The Royals would finish the season with a 5-5 record.

1981

Mason County 28, Lawrence County 0 

Willie Feldhaus threw three touchdown passes to Kelly Middleton.

1982

Bourbon County 13, Mason County 0

1983

Boyd County 32, Mason County 15

1984

Mason County 26, Boyd County 21

Tony Jackson returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter and Chris O'Hearn threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter.

1985

Mason County 28, Williamsburg, Ohio 0

The only game between the two schools.

1986

Mason County 54, MMI 0

Jeff Frodge returned the opening kickoff 72 yards for a touchdown and rushed for two more touchdowns.

1987

Scott 15, Mason County 12

1988

Mason County 8, Scott 6  2 OT

Scott got the ball first in the second overtime and scored a touchdown, but the conversion pass failed. Brian McDowell threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Tolliver and the conversion pass to Jamey High for the win.

1989

Mason County 8, Scott 6

Brian McDowell and Bryan Tolliver connected on a 71-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion pass.

1990

Harry Lewis threw three touchdown passes to Seth Faulkner.

2000

Mason County 48, East Carter 0

Harry Lewis ran for three touchdowns and threw two touchdown passes. Bryan Purcell had a 64-yard interception return for a touchdown.

2001

Mason County 20, Tates Creek 14 

Dustin Grutza threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Myrick in overtime.

2002

Mason County 19, Rockcastle County 12

All of the scoring was in the first half in the Bob Allen Pigskin Classic at Danville.

2003

Mason County 48, Breathitt County 6

Dustin Grutza passed for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns (two to Chris Lofton) and rushed for another TD. Ty Sargent scored on a 51- yard interception return, and Andre Turner returned a fumble 30 yards for a TD in the Recreation Bowl at Montgomery County. Lofton had 254 receiving yards.

2004 

Elizabethtown 35, Mason County 21

2005

West Jessamine 14, Mason County 13

Recreation Bowl at Montgomery County.

2006

Lafayette 21, Mason County 6

Recreation Bowl at Montgomery County.

2007

Mason County 27, Paris 7

Jeremy Thompson rushed for three touchdowns in the Joseph K. Ford Bluegrass Bowl at Lexington Catholic.

2008

Mason County 20, Paris 6

Jeremy Thompson had two rushing touchdowns in the second half.

2009

Mason County 48, Danville 21

Josh Harris returned a fumble 99 yards for a touchdown and rushed for two more TDs. The Royals led 41-7 at the half.

2010

Danville 21, Mason County 14

2011

Lafayette 55, Mason County 0

2012

Lafayette 55, Mason County 6

Jacob Tompkins kicked two field goals for the Royals' only points.

2013

Mason County 34, Boyd County 16

The first of 12 straight wins to begin the season.

2014

Mason County 32, Newport 28

The game was stopped by lightning with 3:28 remaining in the first quarter. At 10:17 p.m., the decision was made to suspend the game until the next night. 

2015

Somerset 33, Mason County 6

2016

Somerset 34, Mason County 7

2017

Mason County 68, North Adams 7

The Royals scored on each possession of the first half and led 44-0 at the end of the first quarter and 60-0 at halftime. 

2018

Mason County 53, North Adams 0

The Royals led 40-0 at halftime.
