Haley White signs to play tennis at Lincoln Memorial University

Mason County senior Haley White has made the most of her time in high school. She was an outstanding student and played basketball, softball, tennis and golf and threw the shot put for the indoor track team.

She signed today to continue her academic and tennis career at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee.

Her signing took place during a Zoom meeting, the first virtual signing for a Mason County athlete.

White says she fell in love with the LMU campus while attending a basketball camp between her freshman and sophomore years.

She said she had many different options to play golf or tennis or both someplace.

While at LMU to interview for their full tuition scholarship, White met with the tennis and golf coaches and toured both sports' facilities.

"I kinda made my decision just based off the feel of the teams; once I decided that was the school for me, I really didn't know which one I wanted to play," White said. "And I still don't necessarily have a preference of one sport over the other; I still go out and golf, you know, all of the time. But it's just that I felt like that their tennis team there was the place for me, and Coach (Marc) Walters gave me a wonderful opportunity to play. And obviously, the scholarship. So, it was just an opportunity I couldn't pass up."

White plans to major in math. That is a full math major, not in teaching.

White played in three tennis state tournaments (teaming with Mallory Conrad for two regional doubles championships), three golf state tournaments and one indoor track and field state meet.

Mason County assistant athletic director Brian Kirk said, "LMU is gaining a phenomenal student-athletic."

Former Mason County tennis coach Clay Boone began coaching White when she was in the seventh grade.

"She is a model for what I consider a student-athletic should be," Boone said. "She excels in all areas including character, academics and athletics."

Mason County tennis coach Andy Clarke said White is "one of the most accomplished student-athletes in Mason County history. And the only thing that surpasses your athletic accomplishments is your character."

Lady Royals golf coach and assistant basketball coach Jason Butler added that White "has made me a better person."

(Updated to change indoor track and field state tournament to indoor track and field state meet.)
