Royals host North Adams in season opener

The Mason County Royals open the football season tonight at home against the North Adams Green Devils in the Meadowview Regional Medical Center Kickoff Classic

Mason County routed North Adams 68-7 last season. Malkolm Devine scored a touchdown on a 60-yard run on the first play of the game. The Royals scored on each possession of the first half and led 60-0 at halftime.

North Adams coach Justin Schmitz said he is a lot more optimistic going into tonight's game against a Mason County team that was hit hard by graduation last spring and has a small roster.

"They're still tough, they're really well coached, but I expect this definitely to be a different game this year," Schmitz said. "You know, we're not the same team and they're not either, so, I'm feeling pretty good about it."

Mason County coach Jonathan Thomas he thinks North Adams will be a running team.

"More flexbone, that kinda thing, some motions and things like that," Thomas said.

He added that the Royals "have to play responsibility football tonight"

Kick off is at 7:30 p.m.

Game notes:

  • This is Mason County's 40th varsity football season. The Royals' all-time record is 225-204.
  • This is Coach Thomas' fourth season at head coach. His record is 12-20.
  • The North Adams football team is not sponsored by the school and is beginning just its fourth season.
