The Mason County Royals led by as many as 16 points, then, trailed by a point with just over a minute to play before pulling out a 69-68 win over the previously unbeaten McCracken County Mustangs in the first round of the Randy Pender Classic at South Oldham today.
The Royals were up 60-44 at the end of the third quarter. McCracken County rallied to take a 66-65 lead. Antwavon "Pig" Williams answered with a field goal and two free throws. Nathan Stonecipher scored for McCracken County to cut the deficit to one. Williams missed the front end of a one-and-one, and the Mustangs took a last second shot in the lane, but it rolled off the rim and the Royals picked up their ninth win of the season.
Williams scored a game-high 24 points. Conner Sweeney added a career-high 21 points.
The Royals play Meade County in the semifinals Tuesday at 6 p.m.
