After a scoreless first half, the Mason County Royals scored on their first two possessions of the second half and beat the Fleming County Panthers 14-0 in the mud tonight at Mason County.
Mason County is the district champion for the second consecutive year. The Royals only had three first downs in the first half. Fleming County had the ball deep in Mason County territory three times in the first half, but the Royals' defense didn't break. One stop was on 4th-and-inches from the Mason County nine-yard line. On the opening drive of the second half, Mason County went 58-yards on 11-plays, capped off by a one-yard run by Josh Harris. On the ensuing drive, Mason County stopped Fleming County on 4th-and-3 from the Royals' 27. The Royals scored their second touchdown on a 23-yard receiver screen pass from Neal Pawsat to Jordan Gilbert. It looked like the play might go for a loss, but Gilbert avoided would-be tacklers, broke to the inside and raced to the endzone. Harris rushed for 100 yards (79 in the second half). Mason County is 9-0 for the first time ever. The Royals close out the regular season at Greenup County next Friday.
