The 2009 National City/KHSAA Boys' Sweet 16 starts Wednesday at Rupp Arena in Lexington.
West Jessamine and Hazard meet in the opening game at noon. West Jessamine is coached by former Bracken County coach and athletic director Robert Hammonds. The Mason County Royals play the Shelby Valley Wildcats Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Mason County will try to become the first boys' team to win back-to-back state titles since Fairdale did it in 1990 and 1991. All but one of the past six state champions had a shot at repeating. Mason County won its first state championship in 2003 and was the state runner-up in 2004. Warren Central won the 2004 title and was the runner-up in 2005. South Laurel won the 2005 Sweet 16 and lost in the quarterfinals of the 2006 tournament. 2006 state champion Jeffersontown lost in the opening round of the 2007 tournament. Scott County was the 2007 state champion, but failed to reach the tournament last year.
