The Mason County Runnin’ Royals continue to bring home the hardware as they competed on Saturday at the Fairview Invitational in Ashland. The Mason County Lady Royals, currently ranked #7 in this weeks AA Coaches Association Poll, were edged by the host Fairview Lady Eagles by 7 points taking home the second place trophy. The Lady Royals were lead by 8th grader Valerie Rice who finished 4th just 6 seconds ahead of teammate Rachel White in 5th . The Lady Royals had 4 girls in the top 10 with Blaine Menke finishing 9th and Alexi Loving 10th. The Lady Royals top 5 was rounded out by Samantha Grayson in 13th position. Iretta Carpenter and Jessica Shotwell rounded out the scoring for Mason County. Ashland finished 3rd in the girls varsity division.
In the boys varsity competiton, Mason County finished 3rd just behind regional rival Rowan County whom the Royals had beaten last week. Mason County was lead by freshman Connor Appelman, with first year runner Braun Applegate placing second on the boys varsity team. Jim Meyers, Nathan Woods, Steven Scaggs, and Tyler Berry rounded out the scoring. The Royals finished just 6 points behind Rowan County and only 2 points ahead of Russell. " These three teams should battle for the last two berths at the state meet along with Lloyd Memorial in November" said Coach Kachler.
The young Royals brought home 3 of the 4 first place trophies in the middle school and elementary school divisions. The middle school girls race was won by Mason County’s Julia Woods with teammates Raylee Kirkland and Sara Bellingham finishing a close 2nd and 3rd respectively. The middle school girls team won 1st place. The middle school boys race was won by Mason County’s Mikal Thackston. The boys team also won first place. The Mason County boys elementary team also won 1st place lead by Alex Robinson.
The Royals next see action at a home All Comers meet on Tuesday and then host the Mason County Invitational on Saturday at the Jockey Facility. An open race for adults will be held at 8:30 AM with Elementary Races beginning at 9:00 AM. The meet looks to host around 30 teams with some of the best competition in the area competing. The meet is open to the public. Admission is charged.
