The community is mourning the death of Danny Boyd. Boyd, the longtime statistician for the Mason County boys' basketball team, died Thursday. Boyd was a member of Central Baptist Church and a supply preacher for area churches. In recent years, he was a substitute teacher at Mason County High School. Boyd ran the scoreboard at the Mason County Lady Royals' home softball games, and he was going to be the coach of the boys' golf team next season. He loved the Mason County teams, but there was no doubt that his priorities were his faith, his family and his friends. Danny and I always greeted each other the same way-one of us would say "Hi Danny," and the other would respond with "Hi Danny." We did that for the last time when we saw each other at the softball game Tuesday. Whenever anyone yelled "Danny" near the scorer's table at The Fieldhouse we both turned around to see who it was. Most of the time, they were wanting Danny, not me.
Danny always gave the Royals' starters a fist pound as they passed the scorer's table on their way to the center circle before each game. He cheered for the Lady Royals softball team as he ran the scoreboard Tuesday. He really cared about the kids.
Danny was one of the first statisticians in the area to keep stats on a laptop computer. I could always count on having the latest stats before, during and after the games. Danny served as the official statistician for the district and regional tournaments. He rushed to get the stat sheets to the teams as soon as they came off the printer.
I have not only lost a stat man, I have also lost a friend.
Our prayers go out for Danny's wife, Darlene, his three daughters and 11 grandchildren.
