The Mason County Royals jumped out to a 27-9 first quarter lead and beat the Montgomery County Indians 71-54 tonight in the first round of the Boys 10th Region Tournament at The Fieldhouse. Mason County made 11 of 15 shots in the first quarter. Darius Miller and Russ Middleton combined for 32 first half points. The Royals led by as many as 30 in the third quarter. Miller ended up with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. Middleton scored 15 points on five three-pointers.
Montgomery County was without starter Brad Utterback and sub Kaleb Curtis. They both suffered ankle injuries in practice this week. Mason County has won 14 straight games. The Royals will play Bishop Brossart in the upper bracket semifinal Saturday at noon. The Mustangs defeated the Deming Black Devils 58-34 in the tournament opener.
