Mason County Royals football coach David Buchanan says the team was fortunate to get in a very good practice Thursday after starting off with a lot of uncertainty.
"Were we going to the gym because of rain, and was Tubby Smith leaving UK? ," Buchanan said in an e-mail mesage. "Our phones were ringing with people thinking Chris Ullery or myself would know or could find out."
"Once we got outside, we did some fundamental work and went into team offense, all shotgun, with heavy emphasis on the run game with pass and screens mixed in, " Buchanan said. " We went for 35 minutes non-stop. For only having 22 players (Thursday), the tempo was great and we executed well. We were real pleased with the work we got in. Our run game blocking in the gun looked like we could be (okay) there."
"We then spent fundamental time on snapping, punting, fielding punts, anddefensive fundamentals and reads. I kept the young (wide receivers) and Colt [Fearis] to work them. We finished with tackling work and then what we call toon time. Great way to finish practice."
"For having what could have been alot of rain, and only 22 players, we were real pleased and felt like we got alot accomplished", Buchanan said. "It has been a while since we have strung together so many consecutive good practices. We are pleased, and optimistic- but also realistic and realize we have a lot of areas to improve."
