Time to pull the plug on this blog

This will be the final post on the blog. It will remain online so you can look back at the posts. I will continue to tweet in-game updates and other sports headlines on my Twitter account, but nothing as extensive as the blog posts. Thanks for reading the blog the past four and a half years.

Colin Faris wins 50-free and is on winning 200-free relay team

University of Kentucky senior Colin Faris of Maysville won the 50-free (20.50) and teamed up with David Sanders, Stephen Wimmer and Chip Aplin to win the 200-free relay and set a Keating Aquatics Center record (1:22.39) Saturday at the University of Cincinnati. Faris took second place in the 100-free (46.15). UK's men's team beat Cincinnati 206-75, but lost to Virginia Tech 197-99. It was the final meet of the regular season for Kentucky.

Lady Saints lose to Campbell Co., Douglas scores 32 points

The St. Patrick Lady Saints lost to the Campbell County Lady Camels 69-58 Saturday night at Campbell County. St. Patrick led by six at the end of the first half, but the Lady Camels outscored the Lady Saints 42-25 in the second half. St. Patrick junior Chelsea Douglas scored a game-high 32 points. Brooke Mosler added 11 points. St. Patrick hosts Cooper Tuesday night.

Royals beat Grant County 66-44

The Mason County Royals used their height advantage to beat the Grant County Braves 66-44 this afternoon at Grant County. The Braves don't have players taller than 6-1. Mason County's 6-9 senior forward Treg Setty scored 26 points (12 in the first quarter) and grabbed 13 rebounds. 6-2 junior Tyler Black had 11 points and 15 rebounds. Mason County had 14 assists and attempted just seven three-pointers. The Royals outscored the Braves 11-3 in the second quarter to lead 27-13 at the half, and scored the first two points of the third quarter. Grant County cut the deficit to 10 at 36-26. Mason County answered by scoring 13 consecutive points. The Royals led by as many as 25 in the fourth quarter. Jordan Gilbert added 10 points for Mason County. The Royals host Montgomery County Tuesday night.

Lady Royals win, Royals lose vs. Rowan County

The Mason County Lady Royals snapped a five-game losing streak with a 69-62 win over the Rowan County Lady Vikings to give Mason County a split in a boy-girl doubleheader tonight in the Pepsi/Mountain Dew Classic at The Fieldhouse. The Royals fell behind by 11, rallied to within one point late in the game, but lost to the Vikings 49-44. Bailey Menke hit five-three pointers and scored game-high 21 points for the Lady Royals. Katelyn Smith followed with 18 points. McKenzie Butler scored 13 points and Courtney Moran added 12 points. The Lady Royals play at Deming Monday night.
Treg Setty and Tyler Black both had double-doubles for the Royals. Setty had 18 points and 12 rebounds. Black scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The Royals play at Grant County Saturday afternoon. The junior varsity game is at 1 o'clock, the varsity at 2:30.

Saints snap an 8-game losing streak with a an 82-69 win over Augusta

The St. Patrick Saints have the Augusta Panthers' number. The Saints picked up their first win of the season with a double overtime victory over the Panthers in December. Tonight, St. Patrick snapped an 8-game losing streak with an 82-69 over Augusta on the Panthers' home court. Five Saints scored in double figures with Tyler Slack leading the way with 20 points. Daniel Yeary followed with 17 points. Cory Jodrey scored 16 points. Ryan Gallenstein added 15 points after missing five games with a knee injury. Ryan Swolsky tossed in 12 points. The Saints play at Eastern Brown Saturday night.

State Tournament pairings

The draws for the state basketball tournaments were held today. The 10th Region drew the 5th Region in the 2011 Houchens Industries/KHSAA Girls’ Sweet 16® State Basketball Tournament.
The 10th Region champion will play the 8th Region champion in the opening game of the 2011 PNC/KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16® State Basketball Tournament. Here are links to the brackets:


Rowan Co. vs. Mason Co. in Pepsi/Mt. Dew Classic

The Pepsi/Mountain Dew Classic will be played as scheduled tonight at The Fieldhouse. Mason County hosts Rowan County in a boy-girl doubleheader. The boys' game is first at 6:30 p.m.
The St. Patrick Saints play the Augusta Panthers tonight in Augusta. The Saints beat the Panthers 86-85 in double overtime on Dec. 11 for their first win of the season.

Reds Caravan makes a brief stop in Maysville

Maysville was the first stop on the Western Tour of the Cincinnati Reds Winter Caravan today.

The schedules are set for the girls' and boys' 10th Region tournaments. The girls' tournament will be played at Bourbon County. The boys' tournament will be played at the Mason County Fieldhouse. Here is the schedule:

Royals outlast Fleming County 69-60

Treg Setty and Tyler Black combined for 43 points and 29 rebounds to lead the Mason County Royals to a 69-60 win over the Fleming County Panthers tonight at The Fieldhouse. Mason County had first half leads of 7-0, 20-10 and 30-22. But Fleming County scored the last eight points of the second quarter to tie the game at 30-30. The Panthers opened the third quarter with four straight points to lead 34-30. Mason County led 49-47 at the end of the third quarter and outscored Fleming County 20-13 in the fourth quarter. Setty had 22 points and 19 rebounds. Black scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Jordan Gilbert added 16 points. Mason County has won three straight games. The Royals host Rowan County Friday night in the Pepsi/Mountain Dew Classic.

Sweet 16® Draw Show is Friday at 1 p.m.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association will conduct the draws for the boys' and girls' state basketball tournaments Friday. The Sweet 16® Draw Show will be televised live on WKYT-TV at 1 p.m. The Houchens/KHSAA Girls‘ Sweet 16® State Basketball Tournament is scheduled March 9-12 at E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green. The PNC/KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16® State Basketball Tournament takes place March 16-19 at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

Slow start dooms Lady Royals in 65-52 loss to NewCath

The Mason County Lady Royals fell behind 14-0 and lost the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds 65-52 at the Lady Royals Gym. Mason County only had four first half field goals and trailed 37-20 at halftime. The Lady Royals cut the deficit to eight in the fourth quarter, but could get no closer. Mason County has lost five straight games and nine of its last 10. Katelyn Smith led the Lady Royals in scoring with 22 points. Bailey Menke scored 15 and Courtney Moran added 10. Mason County plays Rowan County Friday at The Fieldhouse in the Pepsi/Mountain Dew Classic which is a boy-girl doubleheader.

The Mason County Royals held the John Hardin Bulldogs to 22 points below their scoring average in a 60-49 victory tonight in the Joe B. Hall Kentucky Prep Classic at Montgomery County. Treg Setty had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds and was named the Pat Doyle Most Valuable Player of the Game. Tyler Black scored 12 points. Jordan Gilbert and Josh Harris each added 10 points. Mason County hosts Fleming County Tuesday night.

St. Patrick led 27-22 at the halftime, but Paris took control of the game by outscoring the Saints 19-7 in the third quarter. Tyler Slack led the Saints in scoring with 16 points. Deal for Lofton to play in Turkey falls through

All "A" 10th Region tourney games postponed tonight

Tonight's lower bracket quarterfinal round games in the boys' All "A" 10th Region tournament have been postponed and rescheduled for Friday night. The tournament schedule is pushed back one day. The tournament is being played at Regents Hall on the campus of Northern Kentucky University. Here is the revised schedule:

the St. Patrick Saints lost to the Pendleton County 65-49 at home tonight. The Wildcats broke open a close game by outscoring the Saints 30-16 in the third quarter. Daniel Yeary led St. Patrick in scoring with 15 points. Cory Jodrey added 12 points. The Saints play Paris in the All "A" 10th Region tournament Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Northern Kentucky University's Regents Hall.

Royals top Simon Kenton 67-52

The Mason County Royals started fast and finished strong in a 67-52 victory over the Simon Kenton Pioneers tonight at The Fieldhouse. The Royals jumped out to a 9-0 lead as the Pioneers missed their first nine shots. Mason County took a 20-point lead early in the fourth quarter. Simon Kenton got to within 12 with 5:03 to go, but the Royals responded with six straight points and snapped a two-game losing steak. Treg Setty had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Tyler Black was 7-of-7 from the field and scored 17 points. Jordan Gilbert added 15 points. Mason County plays John Hardin Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the 20th Annual Joe B. The Mason County Lady Royals lost the Ashland Kittens 59-51 tonight in Ashland. The Lady Royals cut a seven-point deficit to two with 2:12 to play, but the Kittens scored the final six points of the game. Mason County junior Katelyn Smith scored a game-high 27 points. Alicia Moore added 10 points. The Lady Royals host the Bishop Brossart Lady 'Stangs Friday night.

Boys' All "A" 10th Region tournament begins tonight

The boys' All "A" 10th Region tournament begins tonight at Regents Hall on the campus of Northern Kentucky University. It's Deming vs. Silver Grove in the "play-in" game at 7:30 p.m. The St. Patrick Saints play the Paris Greyhounds in the quarterfinal round Thursday at 6:30 p.m. St. Patrick has one final tuneup before the tournament.
The Saints host the Pendleton County Wildcats Tuesday night.

Lofton hits six three-pointers, scores 31 points in OT win

Chris Lofton hit six three-pointers and scored 31 points to lead the Iowa Energy to a 120-113 overtime win over the Ft. Wayne Fire Ants today in the NBA Development League. Lofton was 10-of-13 from the field including 6-of-8 from behind the arc. He was 5-of-5 on free throws and had four rebounds and one steal.

Lady Saints rally to win All "A" 10th Region tourney for the first time

The St. Patrick Lady Saints scored the last seven points of the game and outscored the Paris Lady Hounds 30-13 in the second half to win 46-41 today in the championship game of the All "A" 10th Region tournament at Deming. It's the Lady Saints' first All "A" region title. Paris led 28-16 at the half. The Lady Saints pulled to within five at 32-27 at the end of the third quarter. St. Patrick started the fourth quarter on an 8-3 run to tie the game at 35-35. A basket by Anovia Byars gave Paris a 41-39 lead with 3:11 to play. That was the last time Paris scored. Katelyn Yeary hit two free throws to tie it at 41-41. Chelsea Douglas put the Lady Saints ahead for good at 43-41 with 2:12 to go. St. Patrick had suffered close losses in the championship game each of the last two years. Lydia Hamilton led St. Patrick in scoring with 17 points. Douglas added 10 points. Hamilton was named Academic All-Region. Douglas, Brooke Mosler and Allison Tolle were named to the All-Tournament Team. The Lady Saints will play Newport Central Catholic in the Touchstone Energy All "A" Classic Feb. 2 at 5 p.m. at Eastern Kentucky University's McBrayer Arena. The Lady Saints are right back in action Monday night at home against Lewis County.

The Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association indoor track meet was held Saturday at the US Bank-Mason County Schools Indoor Athletic Complex. Mason County won the boys' meet and took third place in the girls' meet. Mason County junior Madison Paver won the girls' 55 meter dash (7.92). Mason County freshman Nick Robinson won the boys' 800 meter run (2:23.33). Mason County's team of Valerie Rice, Raylee Kirkland, Cara Woods and Julia Woods won the girls' 4x800 meter relay. Lady Saints beat Brossart 56-42, advance to championship game of the All "A" 10th Region tournament

Brooke Mosler a game-high 20 points to lead the St. Patrick Lady Saints to a 56-42 win over the Bishop Brossart Lady 'Stangs in the semifinal round of the All "A" 10th Region tournament at Deming. Mosler scored 16 of her points in the first half. Chelsea Douglas scored 14 points and Allison Tolle added 10 points. The Lady Saints made 17-of-21 free throws in the second half.
St. Patrick will play the Paris Lady Hounds in the championship game Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Royals lose to Lafayette 62-60 in OT

The Mason County Royals lost to the Lafayette Generals 62-60 in overtime tonight at The Fieldhouse in a game that had 10 ties and 20 lead changes. Both teams were missing a starter- Mason County was without Josh Harris due to an injury while Lafayette 6'7" freshman starter Jackson Davis and reserve Tranard Chester sat out the game for disciplinary reasons. Another starter and another reserve quit the team earlier in the week. The Generals led 62-58 with 33.5 seconds left. Tyler Black's putback cut the deficit to two with 3.1 seconds to go. After a timeout, Mason County forced a turnover with 1.1 second to play, but missed a three-pointer at the buzzer. Lafayette senior guard Dee Yarbrough scored a game-high 27 points. Treg Setty led Mason County in scoring with 17 points before fouling out with 2:30 left in overtime. Jordan Gilbert and Tyler Black scored 17 points apiece. Mason County hosts Simon Kenton Tuesday night.

Madison Central sweeps Mason Co. in girl-boy DH

Madison Central swept a girl-boy doubleheader against Mason County in the US Bank Classic at The Fieldhouse tonight.
The Lady Indians used a 20-0 run to pull away for a 74-50 victory over the Lady Royals. Mason County led 16-12 at the end of the first quarter and was ahead 27-26 before Madison Central ended the half with nine straight points including a long three-pointer that banked in on the buzzer. The Lady Indians scored the first 11 points of the third quarter. Katelyn Smith led Mason County in scoring with 24 points. Bailey Menke added 11 points. The Lady Royals play at Ashland Monday night.
Sophomore point guard Dominique Hawkins scored a game-high 30 points to lead the Indians past the Royals 63-54. There were six ties and nine lead changes. The last tie was at 50-50. Madison Central was 13-of-15 from the field and 14-of-20 from the free throw in the second half. Jordan Gilbert made his first six three-point shots and scored a career-high 23 points for Mason County. Treg Setty tossed in 15 points. It was Madison Central's second win over Mason County this season. The loss snapped the Royals' four-game winning streak. Mason County hosts Lafayette Saturday night.

It's another busy Friday night for high school hoops as all four local teams are in action. The St. Patrick Lady Saints play the Augusta Lady Panthers in the quarterfinal round of the girls' All "A" 10th Region tournament at Deming at 6:30 p.m.
The St. Patrick Saints travel to Alexandria to play the Bishop Brossart Mustangs. The junior varsity game begins at 6 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 7:30 p.m.
Mason County hosts Madison Central for a girl-boy doubleheader in the US Bank Classic at The Fieldhouse. The girls' game is first at 6:30 p.m. The Madison Central Indians, coached by former Mason County standout Allen Feldhaus Jr., beat the Mason County Royals 56-50 in the semifinals of the Gateway Holiday Classic on Dec. 29. Feldhaus' daughter, Ashton, starts for the Lady Indians. She is a 5'-11" sophomore guard.

Chris Lofton is NBA D-League Performer of the Week

Chris Lofton of the Iowa Energy and Jeff Adrien of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers were named NBA Development League Co-Performers of the Week for games played during the week of Jan. 3. Lofton, a 6-2, 125-pound guard out of Tennessee who has played with the Denver Nuggets and Boston Celtics in the NBA Summer League, led the Energy to a 3-1 record on the week, averaging 26.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 3.0 steals. Adrien, a 6-7, 245-pound forward out of Connecticut who played 15 games with the Golden State Warriors this season, led the Vipers to a 2-0 record on the week, averaging 22.5 points, 13.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists.
In Iowa’s 116-108 win over Bakersfield on Saturday, Lofton scored 44 points, setting a new season high for points scored in a single game by any league player, and also added eight assists and four steals. In the Energy’s 124-109 victory over Reno on Jan. 5, Lofton led the way with 30 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Adrien scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in Rio Grande Valley’s 103-81 win over Austin on Friday, and had 31 points and 14 rebound

The Mason County Lady Royals snapped a four-game losing streak with a 64-53 win over the Harrison County Fillies tonight. Bailey Menke led the Lady Royals in scoring with 20 points. Katelyn Smith scored 12 points and Alicia Moore added 11. Mason County plays at Highlands Thursday night.

Lofton puts up 44 points to lead the Iowa Energy to a 116-108 win

Chris Lofton's scoring barrage in the NBA Development League continues. Lofton hit seven three-pointers and scored a season-high 44 points to lead the Iowa Energy to a 116-108 win over the Bakersfield Jam Saturday night. He was 15-of-23 from the field including 7-of-9 on three-pointers. Lofton made 7-of-8 free throws and had eight assists, four rebounds and four steals. He scored 30 points Wednesday night.

Mason County jumped out first quarter leads of 16-0 and 20-2 on their way to a 71-57 win over the Deming Black Devils in their home opener tonight at The Fieldhouse. Treg Setty had a double-double for Mason County with 32 points and 13 rebounds. Jordan Gilbert scored 18 points. Tyler Black grabbed 11 rebounds. Mason County has won four straight games. The Mason County Lady Royals erased a 19-point second half deficit, but lost to the North Laurel Lady Jaguars 45-43 tonight in London. North Laurel scored 15 straight points to lead 31-16. Mason County scored more points in the fourth quarter (22) than it did in the first three quarters combined (21). Katelyn Smith tied the game at 43-43 with a layup on an inbounds play. North Laurel scored the winning basket with four seconds left. Mason County () host Harrison County Monday night.

Mason County and Paul Dunbar split a boy-girl doubleheader Friday night at Dunbar. The Royals broke open a close game by starting the second quarter on 13-0 run and went on to beat the Bulldogs 78-65. Treg Setty scored 33 points. Tyler Black had a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Jordan Gilbert added 11 points. The Royals have a season-high three-game winning streak heading into their first home game of the season Saturday night against the Deming Black Devils.
In the girls' game, Dunbar outscored Mason County 16-5 in the third quarter in a 66-47 victory.

Lofton scores a season-high 30 points

Chris Lofton scored a season-high 30 points to lead the Iowa Energy to a 124-109 victory over the Reno Bighorns Wednesday night in the NBA Development League. Lofton was 9-of-16 from the field including 7-of-12 on three-pointers. He also had seven rebounds and four steals. Iowa is 13-5.

Josh Harris a 2nd Team All-American for 2nd straight year

Mason County linebacker Josh Harris has been named to the 2010 U.S. Air Force Junior All-American Team. Harris is one of 14 players named to the second team defense. Harris was on the MaxPreps.com Sophomore All-American Second Team last year. Here is a link to this year's team.

The St. Patrick Lady Saints routed the West Union Lady Dragons 68-40 tonight. Brooke Mosler led the Lady Saints in scoring with 13 points. Lydia Hamilton and Allison Tolle scored 11 points apiece. St. Patrick plays the Paul Dunbar Lady Bulldogs Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Martin Luther King Classic at Paul Dunbar in Lexington.

Josh Harris is the Class 3A District 7 Player of the Year

Mason County junior tailback/linebacker Josh Harris is the 2010 Kentucky Football Coaches Association/Russell Athletic Class 3A District 7 Player of the Year. Harris rushed for 1,126 yards and 19 touchdowns and had a team-high 88 tackles and two interceptions last season. Mason County Coach David Buchanan was recognized by the Kentucky Football Coaches Association for getting his 150th career coaching victory.

The St. Patrick Saints lost to the Deming Black Devils 80-56 tonight in Mt. Olivet. Deming scored the first eight points and led 17-3. All five Deming starters scored in double figures. Kyle King led way with a game-high 24 points. Cory Jodrey led St. Patrick in scoring with 17 points. The Saints host Calvary Christian Friday night on Homecoming.

Gilbert hits game-winner, Setty scores 34 as Royals edge Campbell Co. 59-57

Jordan Gilbert's three-pointer with 11 seconds to play gave the Mason County Royals a 59-57 win over the Campbell County Camels tonight at Campbell County. Treg Setty, who scored a career-high 34 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, hit a three-pointer to bring the Royals to within a point at 57-56 with 45 seconds remaining. Campbell County missed the front end of the one-and-one. Gilbert made what proved to be the game winner from the left corner. Campbell County missed a three-point shot in the closing seconds. Mason County led by 13 points in the second quarter and was up 40-34 in the third quarter before the Camels scored nine straight points to take their first lead. Setty scored Mason County's first 10 points of the fourth quarter. Mason County plays its 12th straight road game Friday night at Paul Dunbar in Lexington.

Lofton scores 21 points in Iowa Energy win
