Five local golfers win in Northern Ky's 7-Up Junior Golf Tour event at Laurel Oaks
Northern Kentucky's 7-Up Junior Golf Tour came to Maysville today for a tournament at Laurel Oaks Golf Club and five local golfers won their age divisions. The winners include Tyler Lippert, Bradley Litzinger, Russell Rigg, Tiara Harris and Lauren Vice. Here is a link to the results.

Bill O'Mara second in Cynthiana tournament
Bill O'Mara finished second in the Joe Mooney Invitational golf tournament at Cynthiana Country Club. O'Mara was the first round leader after shooting a five-under-par 67 Saturday.
He shot a 71 Sunday. Bart Lenox fired a 69 Sunday and edged O'Mara by one shot.

Deadline to register for Hoop It Hoop 3 On 3 fast approaching
The dealine to register for the Hoop It Up 3 On 3 basketball tournament in Maysville is 11 a.m. Mountain Standard Time on Monday, July 6. The tournament is scheduled July 11 and 12 on Second Street in downtown Maysville. Registration forms are available at the Maysville-Mason County Convention and Visitors Bureau on East Third Street. Drew Traxel wins Chippeways
After three runnerup finishes, Drew Traxel broke through today to win his first Chippeways championship at the Maysville Country Club. Traxel made a five-foot birdie on No. 18 to beat his uncle, Joe Traxel, 1-up in the championship match. The match was all square through 15 holes. Drew went 1-up with a par on 16. Joe birdied 17 to even the match. Drew's match-winning putt on 18 was just his second birdie of the day. The match was played in windy conditions. Drew's dad, Charlie Traxel, was the 1970 Chippeways champion. Joe Traxel is a two-time champion. Drew beat three-time champion Eric Schumacher in the semifinals earlier in the day. Joe was a winner over tournament medalist Deron Feldhaus in the other semifinal. Here is a list of the other flight winners:

The semifinals are set for Chippeways
Four local golfers have reached the semifinals of the 74th Chippeways at the Maysville Country Club. Tournament medalist Deron Feldhaus will play two-time champion Joe Traxel, and three-time champion Eric Schumacher will play Drew Traxel. The semifinal matches are scheduled to tee off at 9:20 a.m Sunday. The winners will meet in the semifinals Sunday afternoon.

Noah Welte named 9th Region Assistant Baseball Coach of the Year
Former St. Patrick and Thomas More College standout Noah Welte has been named 9th Region Assistant Baseball Coach of the Year. Welte is an assistant to head coach Aaron Moore at Lloyd Memorial High School in Erlanger. Welte assisted with the baseball team while finishing his studies at Salmon P. Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University. He also worked in Chase's Law Library, clerked for an Independence law office and was a participant in the nationally known Innocence Project. He graduated May 9th, and is currently coaching Mason County's Ryne King and Bracken County's Andrew Cummins on a Northern Kentucky select team while studying for the bar exam. Welte holds the state record for single-season batting average (.737 in 2000). He set several records at Thomas More College where he was a multi-year All-American. Welte plans a career in the Kentucky Public Defenders Office as a criminal defense attorney.

Deron Feldhaus is Chippeways Medalist
Deron Feldhaus is the medalist for the Chippeways golf tournament at the Maysville Country Club. Feldhaus shot a three-under-par 69 in his qualifying round. That gives him the No. 1 seed in the championship flight of the match play tournament. A shootout for the golfers in the championship flight will be held Thursday evening. First round matches will be played Friday. The quarterfinals are Saturday, and the semifinals and finals are Sunday.

Darrin Doyle on Club Baseball World Series Champ
Former Mason County Royal Darrin Doyle was a member of the University of Kentucky Club Baseball team that won the National Club Baseball Association Division II World Series last month. Doyle, a junior-to-be, is a pitcher. This was his first season with the team. UK also won the World Series last year. Here is a link to a Kentucky Kernel story about this year's World Series win.

Lewis scores 4 TDs as Horsemen win again
Harry Lewis had another big game as the Kentucky Horsemen routed the South Georgia Wildcats 69-41 Saturday night at Rupp Arena. Lewis had seven receptions for 183 yards and four touchdowns. Lewis had touchdown receptions of 8, 37, 25 and 47 yards. The Horsemen play at Corpus Christi this Saturday.

Sprint distance triathlon added to Aug. 15 multisport races
There will be something for multisport athletes of all levels August 15 in Maysville. The MidEast Region Club Finals will be held here for the first time. A sprint distance triathlon has been added to the schedule, and a 5K run and a 10K run will be held that evening. The MidEast Region Club Finals will be held in Maysville with a duathlon (3.1 mile run, 26.1 mile bike, 6.2 mile run) and a triathlon (.7 mile swim, 26.1 mile bike, 6.2 mile run) beginning at 5 p.m. The sprint distance triathlon (.5 mile swim, 12 mile bike, 3.1. mile) will begin after the duathlon and triathlon. Darius Miller named to Men's U19 World Championship Team
Darius Miller has been named to the USA U19 World Championship Team. Miller was one of 17 players invited to the team trials this week at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The final cuts were announced today. The team will compete in the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship for Men July 2-12 in Auckland, New Zealand. I missed this when I blogged the boys' results of the Northern Kentucky Junior Amateur golf tournament-Christian Arn, a sixth grader-to-be at the Mason County Middle School, was the winner of the girls' Wie Division at the Junior Am Tuesday. Arn followed up that victory with a win at the Northern Kentucky Junior Golf Tour event Wednesday at Cherry Blossom. Now that she has two victories, tour rules require Arn to move up to the Annika Division and compete against older girls. Christen Cropper finished third in the Annika Division at Cherry Blossom. Tyler Lippert was third in the boys' 11 and under division. Russell Rigg tied for ninth in the boys' 16-18 division. Here is a link to the Cherry Blossom results.

Litzinger has best finish for locals in Northern Ky Junior Amateur
Bradley Litzinger tied for third place in the boys' 14-15 division of the Northern Kentucky Junior Amateur golf tournament. Litzinger shot a 79 today at Eagle Creek Country Club and had a two-day total of 152, seven shots behind the winner. Tanner Walton tied for 8th in boys' 14-15 division. Tyler Lippert finished fifth in the boys' 11 and under division. Russell Rigg tied for 10th place in the boys' 16-18 division. Jackson Frame was fifth in the boys' 12-13 division. Lady Royals Future Queens Basketball Camp July 13-16
The Mason County Lady Royals Future Queens Basketball Camp will be conducted July 13-16 from 9 a.m. -noon at the Straub Elementary School gymnasium. The camp is for all girls who will be entering grades K-6. Emphasis will be on fundamentals and station work. Grouping will be by age and size which allows for more individual instruction. The cost for each camper is $50 which includes a camp t-shirt. Please make checks payable to Mason County Lady Royals Future Queens Basketball Camp. Registration will begin July 13th at 8:30am at which time payment can be made. Camp brochures can be picked up in the front office at Mason County High School.

Locals among the leaders at the Northern Ky Junior Am
Three local golfers are among the leaders after the first round of the Northern Kentucky Junior Amateur at Eagle Creek Golf Club. In the boys' 14-15 division, Bradley Litzinger shot a 73 and is one shot off the lead, and Tanner Walton is three shots back after shooting a 75. The Mason County girls' and boys' basketball teams both go to Richmond today for more summer basketball games. The Lady Royals will play in a team camp at Eastern Kentucky University, while the Royals are playing in a team camp at Madison Central.

Lewis scores three TDs in Horsemen victory
Lady Royals 4-0 so far at UofL Camp
The Mason County Lady Royals have won their first four games at the University of Louisville Team Camp and are 8-0 this summer. Mason County defeated Harpath, Watertown, Charleston and Bosse at UofL. The Lady Royals play Bullitt East Sunday at 8 a.m. and Heritage Hills at 10:15. The Mason County junior varsity team is 2-2 at the camp with wins over Green and Watertown, and losses to Harpeth and Manual. The JV team plays Heritage Hills Sunday at 9:15 a.m.

Middleton to play in the Kentucky-Indiana All-Star games
Mason County all-stater Russ Middleton will play for the Kentucky All-Star basketball team in the annual series against the Indiana All-Stars this weekend. University of Kentucky recruit Jon Hood is Kentucky's Mister Basketball. The games will be played Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis and Sunday at Bellarmine University in Louisville. The girls' game begins at 3 p.m. and the boys' game begins at 5 p.m.

Miranda Hales named to KIAC All-Conference Team

Tyler Lippert, a sixth grader-to-be at the Mason County Middle School, shot a 42 Monday and won the boys' 11 and under division in the Northern Kentucky 7-Up Junior Golf tour event at Hickory Sticks Golf Club.
Bradley Litzinger, a sophomore-to-be at Mason County, shot an 81 and finished fourth in the boys' 14-15 division at Hickory Sticks.

Five points of emphasis for the 2009-10 high school basketball season
The National Federation of State High School Associations has listed five points of emphasis for the 2009-10 basketball season. They are:
- Traveling
- Closely Guarded
- Three Seconds
- Block/Charge
- Free-Throw Administration

Miller invited to USA basketball Men's U19 World Championship Team trials
Darius Miller has been selected to tryout for the USA Men's U19 World Championship Team. Seventeen players were invited to the team trials scheduled June 16-18 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Twelve players will be selected for the team which will compete in the World Championships in New Zealand. Here is a link to the team trials roster.

Practice begins today for Best of the Bluegrass Classic
The Best of the Bluegrass East vs. West All-Star Football Classic will be played Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Western Kentucky University. The East team, which includes wide receiver Terrence Breckenridge of Mason County, will have its first practice today at 4 p.m. Mason County Coach David Buchanan is an assistant coach for the East team. Buchanan's son, John Combs Buchanan, is the manager. Here is a link to the classic's web site.

Rigg second in opening event on NKY 7-Up Junior Golf Tour
Russell Rigg finished second in the opening tournament on the Nothern Kentucky 7-Up Junior Golf Tour Saturday at Meadowwood Golf Club in Boone County. Rigg and Michael Petering were tied after the nine-hole shootout. Petering beat Rigg in a playoff. Rigg is playing in the tour's second event today at Hickory Sticks Golf Club. Rigg tied for third in the Mussleman-Dunne junior golf tour event Friday at Iroquois Golf Course in Louisville. He had a two-day total of 14-over par 156. Rigg is third in the point standings in the boys' 14-15 division.

Lewis scores a TD in Horsemen loss
Harry Lewis had seven receptions for a team-high 92 yards and one touchdown, but the Kentucky Horsemen lost to the Tennessee Valley Vipers 41-13 Saturday night in Huntsville, AL.
Lewis caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Jared Lorenzen in the first quarter. TheHorsmen took a 13-7 lead early in the second quarter when Lorenzen connected with Lonnell Dewalt on an 11-yard touchdown pass, but Tennessee scored 34 unanswered points. The Horsemen (5-5) host Quad City this Saturday night.

Royals go 4-1 in first week of summer hoops
Summer basketball is under way for Kentucky high school basketball teams. The Mason County Royals are off to a 4-1 start. The Royals beat Boone County and lost to defending state champion Holmes in overtime at Simon Kenton Wednesday night. Mason County defeated Rose Hill, Lewis County and Fairview at Lewis County Thursday.

Maysville/Mason County Night with the Reds July 3

CINCINNATI (June 3, 2009) - The Cincinnati Reds and WFTM Soft 96 have teamed up to offer Maysville/Mason County area residents the chance to enjoy the excitement of Reds baseball at a special discount.
Maysville/Mason County Night will take place on Friday, July 3rd vs. the St. Louis Cardinals at 7:10 pm at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, OH.
Maysville/Mason County residents and those of surrounding areas can purchase half-price tickets for select seating locations.
The game will be followed by a post-game fireworks show with soundtrack starting approximately 15 minutes after the end of the game.
Select tickets & hard copy order forms are available at WFTM studios on Forest Avenue in downtown Maysville. Tickets will only be available at WFTM until June 19th, 2009.
Tickets can be also purchased by visiting www.reds.com/maysville.
Discount tickets must be purchased by Thursday July 2nd to receive the Maysville/Mason County discount. Discount tickets cannot be purchased at the box office on the day of the game.

Tom Creamer elected to KHSAA/Dawahares Hall of Fame
Former Maysville Bulldogs basketball coach Tom Creamer has been elected to the KHSAA/Dawahares Hall of Fame. Creamer had a record of 121-56 in six seasons at Maysville. He guided the Bulldogs to back-to-back 10th Region titles in 1972 and 1973. Maysville upset top-ranked Louisville Central in the quarterfinals of the 1972 state tournament. Creamer coached Shelby County to the 1978 boys' state championship. His teams won 22 district and nine regional basketball championships. He also was the coach of the Louisville Assumption girls' golf state championship team. Creamer was the head football coach at Beechwood from 1964 to 1967.
