The Mason County Royals passed the test in opening round of the Class 4A football playoffs by routing the Greenup County Musketeers 56-21 at home in arguably their best game of the season.
On Friday, in the second round, the Royals travel to historic Putnam Stadium in Ashland to play the 10-1 Ashland Tomcats.
The Tomcats defeated the Harrison County Thorobreds 47-7 last week to run their winning streak to eight games.
Ashland's only loss was to Harvest Preparatory School of Ohio 26-10 on September 6.
Ashland quarterback LaBryant Strader has passed for 1,750 yards and 25 touchdowns with just three interceptions.
Braxton Jennings is the Tomcats’ leading rusher with 793 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Mason County quarterback Teegin Routt has passed for 1,915 yards and 27 touchdowns with 27 interceptions.
Ashland averages 43.5 points per and allows an average of 15.5 points per game.
Mason County’s scoring average is 33.5 points per game and allows an average 17.5 per game.
The Tomcats’ RPI is .70386 compared to .55007 for the Royals.
Ashland and Mason County have played five common opponents with both defeating Russell, Greenup County, Rowan County and Harrison County. Mason County lost to Boyd County 3-0 while Ashland beat the Lions 49-21.
Ashland and Mason County have met three times in the playoffs. The Royals, behind six rushing touchdowns from Dustin Grutza, won 44-21 in 2003. Ashland won 17-0 in 2006 and 35-14 in 2016.
The Royals played the Russell Red Devils at Putnam Stadium in the opening round of the 2002 Class 2A playoffs because Russell’s field was unplayable. The Red Devils beat the Royals 11-8.
