Mason County track and field athlete Elijah Reed received Berea College's Dr. Carter G. Woodson Scholars Award at the Mason County Board of Education meeting on Monday night.
The award honors outstanding high school juniors who embody Dr. Wooden's spirit in the areas of academic excellence, civic engagement and community spirit.
Dr. Woodson, a Berea College graduate, was the second African American to earn a doctorate from Harvard University. He was the first to develop the field of African American studies and created Black History Month.
