Rule changes for the upcoming high school basketball season

The start of the high school basketball season in Kentucky is just two weeks away.

The new season brings several rule changes adopted by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

The rules changes getting the most attention involve free throws and team foul totals.

The one-and-one free throws have been eliminated. Two free throws will be awarded for all common fouls when the fouling team committs five or more fouls in a quarter.

Team fouls will be reset at the end of each quarter.

There will four designated spots in the front court for inbounds passes following a foul by the defensive team or other dead ball situation except when the defensive team causes the ball to go out of bounds.

The four spots are the 28-foot mark on each sideline and three feet outside each side of the foul lane in the end zone.

When the defensive team causes the ball to go out of bounds, the throw-in play will be from where the ball went out of bounds.

Another change allows officials to reverse their call if they allowed the wrong team to inbound the ball, after the throw-in has taken place. Previously, the correction had to be made before the throw-in.

Other rule changes include:

  • Multiple styles of uniform bottoms can be worn by teammates, but they must be the same color and adhere to uniform rules regarding trademarks and logos.
  • Visiting teams will be allowed to wear solid black t-shirts under their jerseys if they cannot find a t-shirt that matches their dark jerseys.
  • Players will be allowed to step out of bounds and return without a violation provided they are not the first player touching the ball when they return inbounds.
