Mason County and Bracken County will meet in Holiday Tournament at Lexington Catholic

39th District rivals Mason County and Bracken County were not scheduled to play each other in the upcoming high school basketball regular season, but they will square off in the opening round of the White-Greer-Maggard Orthodontics Holiday Tournament at Lexington Catholic on December 27 at 8:30 p.m.

"There's a lot of people in the state of Kentucky that wanna see this matchup," Lexington Catholic head coach Brandon Salsman said today on the bracket show on PrepSpin.

"Mason County, they're always the cream of the 10th Region," Lexington Catholic associate head coach Matt Heissenbuttel said on the bracket show. "They have Terrell Henry; they got some good players; they got a good coach, and I know they got some good young kids. Then, you talk about Bracken County, Blake and Caden Reed might be, are two of the better guards in the state. We just thought this would be a very interesting matchup, and a lot of people would like to see it, and you can certainly count me as one of the people that are looking forward to watching it."

Mason County has won 31 straight games against Bracken County. The Royals and Polar Bears did not play each other in the regular season last year. Mason County beat Bracken County 64-54 in the district championship game in February. The Polar Bears ended up being the 10th Region runners-up.

The White-Greer-Maggard Orthodontics Holiday Tournament has a loaded field. North Laurel, led by University of Kentucky signee Reed Shepherd, plays Campbell County.

Madison Central and Warren Central, last season's runner-up, are matched up in the opening round and are in the same four-team pod as Mason County and Bracken County.

The other opening round games include West Jessamine vs. North Oldham, Bowling Green vs. Fern Creek, Lexington Catholic vs. Christian Academy, Lyon County vs. Holy Cross, and Woodford County vs. Ballard.

The tournament will be streamed by PrepSpin.
