The 2021-22 high school basketball season just ended, but the Mason County Royals have already announced news about holiday tournaments for the 2022-23 season.
In a tweet on Wednesday, the Royals announced they have committed to play in the White, Greer and Maggard Holiday Tournament at Lexington Catholic.
The tournament at Lexington Catholic, held after Christmas, is one of the premier holiday basketball events in Kentucky.
The Royals were back-to-back champions of the tournament in 2003 and 2004 when it was known as the Fifth Third Bank Holiday Classic. In the championship game of the 2004 tournament, Chris Lofton hit a 30-footer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. The Royals ended up beating Lexington Catholic 84-81. Lofton scored a game-high 32 points.
Mason County also played in the tournament in 1997, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.
In a tweet on Tuesday, the Royals announced the Mason County Invitational Tournament, scheduled December 20-22, will feature teams from the 1st, 4th, 6th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 16 regions.
Warrren Central won the 2021 MCIT. The Dragons would go on to a state runner-up finish.
