KHSAA Commissioner Tackett addresses red county status and sports

With two-thirds of Kentucky counties in red on the COVID-19 map, many people are wondering if the high school basketball season will start on time.

Kentucky High School Athletic Association Commissioner Julian Tackett addressed the red counties issue during a Kentucky Department of Education webcast on Tuesday.

"Remember, that all the data has shown that in school together, we've not seen spread in athletics," Tackett said. "It's really your call based on what's going on in your community. It gets back to something that both Dr. Glass, Dr. White and everybody else said, the red county thing is a red flag for deep discussion. How necessary is that you practice basketball. We recommended early in the fall, that we not have any practice in sports that were not in season. And yet that was adhered to 100% either. It's a need for a very deep discussion and try to really address community gatherings and events, and it may be different from school system to school system. That's been our stance all along. We're providing an opportunity for those that can; if you can't that's fine. We're trying to strike a balance here and let those you make those local decisions."
