10th Region media days

Boys' and girls' basketball coaches in the 10th Region met with the media virtually today. You can watch the interviews on the coaches association Facebook pages.

The Mason County Royals lost seven players to graduation.

"We've got a lot of young guys that's competing for those minutes," coach Brian Kirk said. "There's a lot of minutes to be earned out there, and they're coming in, they're working hard every day."

Kirk said this is one of the youngest teams he's ever had.

"But it's also exciting to know the kids that we've got in our program right now, we're going to have for two or three years down the road," Kirk said.

Evan Schumacher is the only senior on the Royals' roster.

First-year St. Patrick coach Tony Moore also has a young team. Several players transferred to other schools, but Moore said he's excited that the Saints do return four starters.

"They know what we're going to be doing this year," Moore said. "And I'm just trying to look for probably two or three more to go a little bit deeper, but I do like my chances with my team."

And what about style of play for the Saints under a new head coach?

"We're going to be doing five-out, five-out motion, just moving the ball moving, just keeping the ball moving," Moore said.

St. Patrick Lady Saints coach Andy Arn said he is excited about his team even though three players graduated and there are no seniors on this year's team.

"Coming into this season, I didn't expect us to skip a beat," Arn said. "We have a lot of talented players coming back with a lot of experience."

Arn said he believes the Lady Saints are a top 10 in the region, "but I also understand that we to prove it on the court."

Mason County Lady Royals coach Brad Cox said he's pleased with his team.

"I really like our group of kids and they've really bought into what we're trying to do," Cox said. "And I think that they understand the overall message that you can't take anything for granted that I've preached throughout my time as the head coach here, but it's really taken to a new level this year because on a flip of a hat, we might have to shut down, you just don't ever know when it's going to happen, so, you got to take advantage of your time in the gym and try to get better. And I think our girls have don that."
