Believe it or not, I am not missing sports (other than not playing golf) during the Covid-19 pandemic.
I hate it that athletes have had their seasons canceled, especially high school and college seniors, but I have found other ways to occupy my time.
I love to read and I have read four books during the quarantine.
I would recommend all four:
The Civil War in Kentucky by Lowell H. Harrison
Engineering Corporate Success A Memoir by Maysville native James Hardymon
Mitch, Please by Matt Jones
The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by Daniel James Brown
I have spent a lot of time working on a book I am writing.
My wife and I have cleaned out the basement, shined the hardwood floors and completed a jigsaw puzzle.
I just started running again after falling and suffering an ankle injury in January.
I have discovered a couple shows on PBS.
Still, I am surprised I don't miss sports for the time being. I never thought that would be the case.
After calling the state basketball tournament for 40 consecutive years, I was looking forward to going as a fan for the first time. I bought lower arena tickets for two sessions.
I purchased 40 tickets for a group outing to a Cincinnati Reds game in July.
I am disappointed the state tournament was canceled, and it doesn't look like the Reds will be playing in Great American Ballpark by July.
But, still, I'm doing okay without sports.
There are a lot of things I am missing during these trying times, including spending time with my daughters and my friends, visiting my mom, going to church and taking trips.
I have missed playing golf. While it appears to be safe to play if you practice social distancing, I haven't played this spring. I have hit balls in the backyard most pretty days, and I do plan to head to the golf course when the weather stays warm.
I still love sports and I will watch the games when they return. I'm just not missing them right now.
Call me crazy.
